Car camping for a couple nights.

Looking for a bit of privacy, light hiking, and views.

Wife and dog with.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Best thing to do at Helena is leaving Helena. LOL

Maybe I don't understand the question, but national parks and Helena MT throws me a bit. My first thought on national parks is Yellowstone and Glacier and I wouldn't consider Helena as a base to make trips to either one. There's plenty of car camping and hiking near Helena in National Forests. Gates of the Mountains and Scapegoat Wlderness areas offer more hiking and aren't far from Helena.

What am I missing here?

Helena National Forest possibly...

4x4? Campground or not? Need to actually be close to Helena or not?

I'd probably be looking at the Lincoln area - about 50 miles northwest of Helena - quite few campgrounds, typically a little cooler than Helena, more scenic and easy access to the Scapegoat Wilderness with lots of trailheads.

Stemple, Fletscher and Rogers passes are all close to Lincoln and provide access to the Continental Divide Trail.

Road trip from Coeur d'Alene to Teddy Roosevelt National Park in ND.

Trying to stay within an hour of I-90 on the first leg.

If 4x4 you could drive up on the Elkhorns, Castles, Belts or any other of the numerous ranges and chill. All I have is try to go high, it'll be cooler, that's for the current time frame. Could blow, rain or hail like heck too.

Vehicle?

Sounds like you are looking for a midway point?

Developed, or not?

With that, I'd get off I90 just pass Missoula and take Hwy 200 to Lincoln. After Lincoln, you can take Fletscher Pass to Helena to reconnect to I90. Not sure if that's further off I90 than you want to be, but it's a beautiful drive and will provide the other opportunities you mentioned.

Would not drive to Helena off of 90, lots of places east of there to camp.
Fishing or biking in the mix?
