Wondering if any of you saw/followed the sale of two Savage 99's on GunBroker recently. I apologize for not being able to provide links so you can click on them as my 'how to do' skills for doing so are vastly lacking. Tried to do so, but not successful. I know links would simplify the matter but thought someone here may have been watching their sale. Asking as considering both rifles good condition, models, caliber, and such I thought they'd sell for more than they did. Might have been some hidden problems I failed to see and keener eyes here would recognize. The info on the two rifles are as follows. I still have them on my GB 'watch' page in case someone could advise how to post.

#1---GB item #936 603 075. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/936603075
A 1921 dated 99, .303 caliber, 20" barrel. No D&T holes, bore is listed as very shiny and good. Rifle appears to be in very good condition. Left side of stock had a few slight issues, metal bluing about normal for the age. Only sold for $784.99, had 15 or so bidders. Sale heading written: "1921 Savage 99. .303-20" barrel."

#2---GB item #938 956 262. https://www.gunbroker.com/item/938956262 A 1928 dated Savage 99G, .303 caliber. No D&T holes, bore listed as excellent. Bluing looks normal for age. Stock has a compass fitted to right side of stock. There are 7 notches cut onto the left top of the forearm (suppose # of animals shot by someone). Also only sold for $784.99, also had around 15 or so bidders. Sale heading on GB: "Savage 99 Takedown, '303 caliber. Super High Condition. 1928 C&R NR."

Found it unusual that models and calibers of these 99's would sell for less than $800 after viewing similar ones on GB and Guns International for some time and viewing values of similar rifles the last 3-4 years. As I mentioned before maybe there is something amiss in both that more seasoned 99 fans saw and took note of. Interesting that both guns sold for the same amount and even more interesting that both were purchased by the same bidder. Both sellers were in different parts of the US.

I tried saving both GB items by clicking 'save', which it did, but when opening both links a out of proportion 'big' screen shot would occur. Also when trying the 'insert link' square above the message box (fifth from right), it wanted the URL inserted which I have no idea. I know without seeing proper pics and info it's hard maybe to give a good comment, as before, thought someone on this site may have been following them and watching. Unless you have them on your watch list, both are gone on GB. I still have them on my watchlist so maybe some Good Samaritan could advise how to properly post.

I'm a Remington 8/81 fan/shooter. Have noticed price declines on GB/GI for run of the mill A grades for those also. Around a year/plus ago 8/81's in good/average condition were selling in the $700-850 range. Higher grades and hard to find calibers more. 300 Savage and 35 Remington calibers of the common A grade started hitting $1000 plus, saw some hitting even up to $1400. Many on the 8/81 forum new to the models were paying that, I mentioned I hope they'd recoup their investment if they want to sell, but alot felt that the $1000 plus was here to stay. I've kept many of the 300 Sav and 35 Rem in my watch list until GB deletes them and you could follow the increase and notice the decrease over time. As you penned hanco ref Sav 99's, "Market coming back to more realistic pricing".

Was surprised that the 99G that was in pretty good shape except for the compass and forearm notches went for less than $800. The other rifle (#1) not real sure of its model. It is a takedown, straight, uncheckered stock, has serial #235461 on bottom of receiver, also has 'Savage 1899 Model' stamped on to of receiver ring. At first I thought it could be a 99D or F, but that 1899 Model stamped on receiver ring threw me. Went back and looked at pictures, it does have a tang crack on the stock as when I first viewed the pictures I didn't spend much time on them. Never bid on either rifle, just wanted to see what they sold for. Need to take the time and study Rory's and David's books.

Hadn't looked close, but yeah.. a compass will kill the sale value. Not surprised at the 99G price with that in it.

The other one you could call an 1899H or a 99F Version 1.. it should be a 1921 rifle and right about the time of the switch to Savage using model letters. The two models (1899H and 99F V1) are identical, I'd call it an 1899H just because it's slightly under 236,000. The wood condition on that is so-so. Overall a decent gun, but not high quality. I'd say that's about the price I'd expect it to go for with a hairline tang crack.

Decent guns, but nothing special. Sold for more than they would have a couple years ago.

Common configuration 303s that don't have condition or have been whittled on have never been good sellers or in high demand.

Thank you Rick, for adding the links to my orginal message, appreciate it very much.

Rory I took some time to look at the #1 rifle DOB 1921 and from what you posted and having yours and David's books handy I'd agree with ya about being a 1899H. Serial number under 236 as you posted. Wouldn't having Savage 1899 stamped on receiver ring give it away or did the 99F's or at least maybe early ones have that also? Reference the 1899 rifle, when I first added the rifles to my watch list on GB, I didn't scan the pictures thoroughly. Both rifles were on the list some time before bid time was over and they came up on my email as ending. Just checked the final price (for both rifles) and was surprised of the sell price. Forgot about the tang crack until posting my 2nd posting on this thread. Ya, dat' would be a lower bid buy for me, although alot of buyers will buy em, have seen some go pretty high as if there was no crack. Thanks for your info.

The SAVAGE MODEL 1899 stamp actually started in late 1920 and continued up to around 1927. Savage kept it after creating model letters and cataloguing them as 99’s. So it’s usually not the same as the model.

I don't know about you fellas, but I'm not real optimistic with communists intent on destroying America, AND, no one stopping them. I'm not buying anything right now.
