It's the second time in two days, I've heard of Russian tea. Take tang orange drink, powdered lemonade, and ice tea mix with all spice or cinnamon and nutmeg, and put it in hot water. Andrew Zimmer was making those yum yum sounds drinking it on his program today. It seems like a lot of sugar to slurp down in one drink. Has anyone tried it?

That is "Spice Tea" and it is very good. We would always drink it around Christmas when I was a kid.

Just don't use the powdered iced tea mix with sugar. Tang has plenty!
Hot tang is far better tasting than it sounds. Joe Reddington (Father of the Iditarod) used to push it. I like it a lot on cold nights in camp when I need a hot drink without caffeine and also when I have a cold and need to stay hydrated and a dose of C.

Yep, had quite a bit as a kid. Don't think it's very authentic unless it originates in a samovar though!

My great aunt always served it with homemade sugar cookies around Christmas - when I was a boy I thought it was really something special.

Does this look like an authentic recipe? I got it off the net.
27 oz. Tang 6 oz. Sweetened lemonade mix 1 cup instant tea 1 cup sugar 1/2 tsp. cloves 1/2 tsp. cinnamon

Used to drink Russian Caravan, a strong black tea for real tea drinkers. Best with cognac or brandy. Never mind all those woosie flavors.

Mom used to have the stuff mentioned in the original post around from mid-Oct til March or so. Sis and I drank gallons of it. We whined when we had to drink Hot Chocolate instead.

I prefer a Serb winter drink "Shumadinsky chai" -- half and half boiling water and shlivo/prepechinitsa with sugar to taste. But it is not for polite company.

Remember hot Dr. Pepper? I still remember the TV ads.
We had the hot Tang spice tea all winter around our house.

27 oz. Tang 6 oz. Sweetened lemonade mix 1 cup instant tea 1 cup sugar 1/2 tsp. cloves 1/2 tsp. cinnamon I don't have a recipe, but looks about right to me. Again, I'd go easy on the sugar, add to taste. Tang has quite a bit of sugar for my taste.

I'm suprised steelhead hasn't popped in to mention liking hot tang I'll try and find an authentic non tang chai recipe. My favorite for taking the chill off is either a hot buttered rum, or hot coco with a shot of Captain Morgans and a shot of Kahlua. Mmmm, makes me look forward to winter

The Russian Tea I've tried has Vodka as an ingredient and is quite a lot easier on the sugar portion than are some recipes above.
