Yes, asked to leave, then wash your plate silverware and put it in the rack.

We always prayed over dinner but I never asked to be excused or even thought about it. We were poorer than dirt. I usually ate as fast as I could so that I was the first to ask for seconds. I ate enough Mac n Cheese plain or with a can of tuna or a little ground beef mixed in that I still hate it to this day. It seemed like it was the only thing that we ever ate and it mostly was!

The only thing I asked not to eat was when Mom fixed scrambled eggs and spinach for supper. Just could not go that.

We had to ask, “ May I be excused?”

Sometimes we were and sometimes we weren’t.

Mom was pretty good about preparing meals we were happy to eat. We weren't poor, but we weren't anywhere near rich either.

We had to ask to be excused and not ask what was for desert until the adults were done eating. My kids called it saying the “D” word before it was time meant you didn’t get any.

Dinner was the only time we all got to sit together. No one wanted to leave the table unless we had to. Our first dinner table was a cable drum.

If you left, you said "excuse me", and you better tell them why.....and have a good reason. This was usually at my grandmother's house mostly. She was born in the 1890's and that's how it was done.

Hold the chair's and seat all the lady's, When everyone was seated say grace, Please, Thank You, yes sir, no sir, yes mam, no mam, take your hat off when meeting a lady, going in the door hat off, going out the door hat on, Wipe your feet, elbows off the table, speak when spoken to, do you chores happily, i could go on.

Everyone deserved respect unless they proved other wise, don't be a cry baby. Rio7

Grew up in a suburb, when we got home from school we told mom where we were headed and went off and had fun till dinner time. My dad could do the most awesome two fingered whistle when he got home from work and it told me (and all my pals) time to go to dinner!

When a kid, our dinner table also was a happy place and we hung around for the fun. But, when there was a ball practice/game or some studying.practicing to be done, it was -

"May I be excused, please?"

Wife and I continued that with our kids - they are now in their 50s and one is 61 - they still ask.
