That sucks. We don’t have a problem with wet hay normally, but we’ve burned a lot of cotton modules because of green bolls. Usually takes several before they catch fire.

It happens quite often.

But it's more about biology than chemistry. Enough moisture in the hay allows biological decomposition which generates heat. Eventually enough heat accumulates to initiate combustion.

Oh, yes. It is more appropriately referred to as a hay "stack" fire.
Happens in bales of recycling paper too. Alot.
Fortunately, paper bales don't usually burn with the vigor of hay bales and there are lots of people driving around the bale yards all the time.
