Merlin for me. I was at an airshow one morning when four Mustangs came in low, with those Merlins growling, and it just wrecked me for life. As it turns out, those four Mustangs all had aces from the 357th FG in them, Chuck Yeager, Bud Andersen, and two others who's names slip my mind at the moment. I got to meet them and have Andersen autograph his book for me. They were all nice guys, but Andersen was top notch.
You can roll a turd in peanuts, dip it in chocolate, and it still ain't no damn Baby Ruth.
I tend to lean toward the classic Merlin, but they’re both great engines. I was at Thunder over Michigan a few years ago and they had the Canadian Lancaster, two Spits, two Mustangs and a Hurricane do a flyover. 9 Merlin’s worth of engine noise. A beautiful thing.
Oh! Those Spits made my day. On my bucket list whenever (or if) I get back to England to get a ride in that two seater.
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”
