Thinking about mounting one on top of a 300 Win Mag rifle I should receive in a couple of weeks.

The good, bad and the ugly?

Big Stick will be along soon to tell you they are pieces of cshit. I have 30 plus, don’t do any dialing. They are fine for the hunting I do. I have the VX III models. 300 yards is my longest shot.

This will be used for long range shooting and hunting. The glass looks spectacular in the store, but want in the field opinions. Need a scope that will track without fail and I'm skeptical about the the VX5/VX6 line on that regard, and I already have a couple of those scopes.

Just want to know if it's worth the extra coin over a VX6 4x24 model.

They say a lot of good things about the vortex line of scopes for dialing-long distance shooting.

The Mark 5 is substantially better built than the VX series, but still is not as reliable as other choices out there. It’s better than most, but I wouldn’t put reliability up there with a Nightforce.

Somewhere on Snipers Hide a few years ago someone did a tracking test with a pile of common LR scopes. Most all them did pretty well, within a few % points of deviation. I’m sure you could find it with some searching. Keep in mind, however, tracking right out of the box is just one element to consider. As a hunter who greatly values his time in the field, will it still track and return to zero properly after the inevitable bumps and bruises from legitimate use? Traveling around in planes, boats, trucks, atvs? After being bumped around on a backpack, smashed against a tree in a horse scabbard, tipping over after leaned against a tree, a slip and fall off your shoulder? That’s the true test. That’s where only a few names shine.
