We are thinking of doing an all steel home. Have the building shell/frame figured out but I am thinking about going will metal studs and joists.

Looking for input on the metal joists and how they work. Been around a few offices w metal framing but they always have suspended ceilings and I will be going with sheetrock.

Anybody have some pics of how the ceiling joists work in a steel framed house with rock ceilings??

Yes a little more expensive than wood but from what I am seeing it is minimal. Exterior wall framing is done during building construction so the studs are just on interior walls.

Going to be built on a slab so no floor joists.

Input?

If you want an improvement on wood frame, consider a masonry frame home. Lots is information on masonry frame homes at the SCMCA web site.

Asked my step-dad years ago about the difference when he was building a couple spec homes. Wasn't his thing but he had a few lots he wanted to build on and sell.

His response: metal frame house is square.

Bottom pic. That larger beam must be resting on something at each end and provides relief to ceiling joists to eliminate sag.

Only way to get flat walls anymore, only about half the studs out of a typical unit delivered are suitable to build with.

And no termite issues. Building in the woods and this is a big draw to me.

Exterior wise, yes. This is the same companies building my cousin is getting ready to move into.

He went with stick framed interior walls on living quarters side.

I won't need exterior wall framing as this is taken care of with the building.

Not even remotely close. Whoever wrote that has zero idea what it costs.
Minimum labor cost to wood frame a basic ranch house here, $5.00/ft, materials on a very basic ranch, $10/ft

Steel? Double that.

I think their wood figures are way off.

Take $30k off of this bid. The $30 was natural cedar siding so can't include that in framing costs.

Just over 2000 sq. feet.

For structural or non-structural steel studs?

That's non. Yes structural are about $3-4 per stud more.
