2 summers when I was a teenager.

Miserable [bleep] work, but the money was great for a 13/14 year old kid. As the crew dwindled down from quitters, the rest of us who were left got paid more. By the end of the first season I did it, there were only 5 or 6 of us left out of an entire busload at the outset.

Why?

Jimmy cracks corn and he don't care.

To raise hybrid seedcorn you need to remove the tassel from the female corn rows.

And do you have to hand pollinate before removing the tassel?

The bull rows take care of that.

Not familiar with growing seed corn, so why remove the tassels if they're already pollinated?

Still a risk of windblown pollination of kernels that didn't get it from the bull rows?

Some male rows are left to pollinate the female rows.

The resulting seed is hybrid seedcorn, heterosis, hybrid vigor.

Ran mechanical detasselers a few summers while in highschool and college. It paid well with lots of overtime. Could make more in one month than other jobs for a whole summer. Pioneer and then Asgrow.

Also ran the roll cutter a couple summers to take out the male rows prior to harvest.

I detasseled corn for a little outfit called Keltgen Seed about 60 years ago. Are they still around?
