stainless Ruger P series...I haven't decided on a .45 ACP or a .40 S&W caliber

L.D.

Masaad Ayoob likes the Rugers. I could never quite warm up to one. That's just me though. Great double action triggers and the grip feels good in my hand, but the hammer drop/safety controls seems to be ackward.

Glovebox gun, Sure. Affordable, you Bet. Better than nothing.

Lousy place to keep a gun, every crook in the world looks there first!

T.Lee is correct, every crook looks there first. So my thought is to use one I would not cry too much if I lost.
I alternate between a 38 Stainless Rossi 2" and a German Makarov.
I know you guys will jump all over me because of the small calibers.
However, I would almost bet you that more people fall to the lowly 22 , outside the military than any other caliber.
Besides until very recently both the crooks and police were armed with much smaller calibers than we now use. Personally I would not even like being shot with a 22 short.

Logan I hope your glove box has a better lock on it than any I have ever seen on any auto I am familiar with. I also hope that if you keep it locked up you have time to unlock it if you need your pistol.

Goldfield you ain't alone. My car gun is a makarov. Cheap, reliable and if someone steals it I don't have to mourn too much. With corbons it ain't that bad either. All I have used it on seriously are a few large dogs that disputed my right to exit my pickup.

the lock was invented to keep honest men honest...a criminal will find a way to get past it..I think the Ruger is affordable enough if it gets stolen out of my glovebox it won't hurt my wallet too much

No biggie, I don't leave guns in unattended vehicles, I had one stolen and never recovered. This won't happen to me again, I don't care how cheap it is, it can still kill somebody in the wrong hands! I ain't suppling some [bleep] with a gun!!!!

T Lee,
I agree with you. Vehicles seem to be easy entry targets for the bad guys. All you are doing by leaving a firearm in one is simply arming them for free. I am considering going through the process for a concealed carry permit here in Colorado. The main reason is to be able to take a firearm into any jurisdiction here in Colorado, and legally remove it when not in my vehicle. I think I'll wait until the current appeal of the C.C. law is ruled upon.

TLee as usual is correct. I do not want to arm one of the varments either.
Where I live is a lot like Mayberry, we don't have a great deal of theft, or other crime for that matter. I have never had one stolen.
I too have thought about the concealed carry, but I don't like paper.
I have always thought that if I used one it's not being registered. or my not being liscensed would probably be among the least of my problems.

the car is locked and so is the glovebox !...A Ruger P Series is kind of large..making it harder to conceal.

I am not trying to be argumentative, just informative, OK? I am not a crook, but was a Deputy Sheriff for 26 years, even I can be in your locked car and glove box in less than 30 seconds and be on my way with your gun in under a minute with a simple screwdriver! Just some food for thought.

I have a license to carry but I usually don't feel the need to be armed all the time..If I go somewhere out in public my .357 is in the car. I'm not too worried about crime but there are an awful lot of people who get road rage in traffic...nowadays people will kill you just to get to where they're going five minutes earlier. I'm more worried about roadragers than just about anything else

LD & TLEE

If you carry a firearm in your glovebox, it should only stay there until you have completed your journey, then removed. IMHO, if you don't have a CCW, and are going to and back from someplace, it is better to have it with you than not have it with you and need it. You are responsible for your own safety. The chance you take when your vehicle is parked, is someone may use a B.F.R. (Big F---ing Rock) and brake into your vehicle. A glovebox is the easiest thing to brake into and I'd have to disagree with TLEE here, I think the time it would take a skilled crook to get into it, is more like 2 seconds.

You can install a "Gun Vault" (I have one in my vehicle) that gives a degree of security and is quickly accessible.

Also, Just as important, is knowning when you can use it and you can't! As is having the proper "mind set" for using deadly force.

We had so many car breakins at one time, that dispatch would air the call of the breakin and if a patrol car was available, they would respond to the scene. Otherwise, they would do a "paper" report over the phone. Something to think about.

As to caliber, my recommendation is nothing less than .38 special. Good Luck Sir.

Here is a vote for a Ruger P97D. The recent re-bate caused a .45ACP to appear in my gun locker <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" />

Shot it at the CCW qualification to day and it is very nice to shoot. Balance and accuracy puts this one in the top five of my favorite pistols. Plus Ruger P-XX are tough units and will fire nearly anything you can find in .45ACP.

Load it, de-cock it and toss it is the glove box, tool box or tackle box and it will be around when you needed...thinks of it as a flatish GP100 357 kind of gun.

I just got rid of a Ruger P-94 in .40 s&w. Never would feed riliably. I tried every kind of factory ammo available. One day it would feed and shoot just fine and the next day with the same ammo it would jam up every 2 or 3 shots. Didn't seem to matter how much I cleaned or what I did. Swapped the Ruger for a Glock 23. Say what you want about a plastic pistol, but its never failed to feed and fire. Maybe I got a bad pistol or maybe I was doing something wrong and just didn't figure it out. Ruger makes a great single action revolver, but I'm done with them as far as a semi-auto pistol is concerned.

A personal issue for me, I knew well a 16 year old and a 19 year old who ain't with us any more on account of guns in the hands of punks.

Who gives a flying $%&* about dollars? I'd give 'em all away in a heartbest to get those guys back.

Along with our guns comes responsibility. I ain't about to give my guns away by leaving them in the car. Although I've heard good things about them quick access gun vaults that Prospector speaks of.

Oh yeah, of the guns mentioned, my vote goes to the Ruger .45, a great gun.
