Things move slowly in Hazelton. Hazelton, ID is a tiny town of less than 1000. Familly Dollar just built a new store there. It's the 1st new business to be built in Hazelton in 50 years.
HAZELTON — Mayor Art Watkins was one of the few people who had never stepped foot in a dollar store — until one was built in his town.
“There’s more stuff in there that I thought,” Watkins said of the Dollar Tree/Family Dollar combination store that opened two weeks ago. The ribbon cutting was held Thursday. family dollar
It’s 10,000 square feet of food, crafts, toys, household items, clothing and more. City leaders say the store will save residents from driving to Twin Falls for necessities.
Plus, the building represents the first store built in town, with its population of 900 people, in more than 50 years.
The business on Main Street will provide some competition to a few stores, Watkins said, “but I don’t think it will affect them much.”
It isn’t uncommon for the stores to be in smaller communities.
“Hopefully, people will save a lot of gas money,” District Manager Bill Menhart said.
Other rural Idaho towns with Family Dollar stores include Challis and Arco. The Hazelton store is among the first combination stores in Menhart’s region. Dollar Tree purchased Family Dollar in 2014.
Just how many items are packed in the store?
“Thousands,” is all Menhart could offer, adding that seasonable items are switched out constantly. “You never know what will be coming in,” he said.
The new store has nine employees, six from the Hazelton and Eden area. Wages start at $10 per hour.
“We need Hazelton to grow,” said the resident of about 50 years.
She sold off an acre of farmland for the store to be built. Because she is so glad the store is there, “I would have almost given it (the land) to them,” she said.
She’ll save money on milk and other items, she said.
Business growth can’t stop there, Holland said. There are empty warehouses in the city that need to be occupied. Plus, she has land available for businesses wanting to build.

We have one, right next to the Piggly Wiggly. Tractor Supply moved in too - haven't been there yet.
I don't shop at DG typically.

These little businesses are key to holding a town together, whether you like it or not.

We have a DG right next to our small local chain grocery store. It’s usually a disaster zone of schiet lying all over the place but hey, potheads need a place to work too. They’re putting up a family dollar on the other end of town and I suspect that if it has any management at all it will put the DG out of business.

That's about 96% of all DG,FD stores I've ever been in.

But, competition is at the heart of the American way, no? When a multi billion$ out of state corporation moves into your town, sets up next to ma and pa, that isn’t competition, that is dominance. Those dollar stores are a blight on society…

we have three dollarstore chains in our town. the biggest problem we have is local ordinance violations. these chains almost neevr own the property they are built on. and when a ticket for say trash and debris is written to the owner, it gets dismissed as being contractually obligated by the store chain. the store chain just tosses the citations. the best way we ahve found to remedy it is to charge the store manager with the violation as being the tenants representative under state law. the stores aren't really the benefit to towns everyone thinks they are

Calhan ,CO, about 20 miles east of me has a Dollar Store and a Dollar Tree right across the road from it. Calhan probably has 762 800 people according to the 2020 census, but it draws a lot of farm and ranch customers out in the more rural area surrounding it.
It only has ever had one grocery store and that is still in business. One 7-11, 2 cafes, an auction barn, and a propane business. Nothing else to drive out of business

Never underestimate the insatiable appetite that Americans have for cheap “things”. Only surpassed by Tyler’s insatiable appetite for cock.
