Steak was a rarity at our house. I used to love to go to the grandparents place because there was a great chance I'd get to eat steak. It seemed so foreign, so extravagant. Should add that we ate a TON of deer. Dad would shoot several every year. I remember most of it being tough and gamey. Blech. When I was a kid I was eating dinner at my friend Johnny's house. Times were tough so they ate a lot of deer meat and that's what was for dinner. I could tell they were a little embarrassed about it. Anyway, Johnny was a good kid so he gave his mom a compliment, said "mom, this is delicious, what is it?" His mom tried to be discreet and said "honey, it's what I call your daddy sometimes." And Johnny's big brother blurted, "spit it out Johnny, it's an aśśhole!!"

Everything is too easy these days. Easy to park your kids in front of a screen all day. Easy to park your ass on a couch and let Pancho do the yard work. People are just lazy. I like doing my own stuff. I get more out of my workers when I'm working with them. My Daughter loves soccer. Plays in every league that we'll let her. My son plays basketball and football. They can eat whatever they want. They are burning calories like growing kids should. Lazy is the problem. I know fat guys that could out hike or work most anyone. They aren't in perfect shape, but there's muscle under that fat. Some people are just fat and bones.

I go to places where it's not prevalent. It isn't in Colorado, for example. When I visited down your way a few years ago, people seemed much more fit. There are other places fat is the norm. Go to a Wal-Mart in Gainesville.

I'm not out and about very often, but I notice more scrawny as hell teen males than fat ones, the teen females tend to be chunky on the other hand. By the time they hit their mid 20's they seem to be plumping right up. When I do go to town I do a lot of people watching while sitting in the parking lot waiting for the wife to get done shopping.

I see plenty of obese people every day. I also see far more very fit people than I did in the '70s and '80s. Most of the young people and their parents w/ whom I interact are very health conscious and participate in strenuous activities. Endurance events like the Western States and Hardrock 100 mile mountain trail runs have 1000s more applicants than places available and are filled via lottery open only to those who have finished qualifier events. Backpack hunters that go very hard are all over You Tube and fitness and nutrition are discussed vigorously as part of the whole experience.
The good old campfire has plenty of folks that hunt from stands and are more into lard and cast iron cooking than fitness. When I started boot camp in 1966 few could do 20 pushups or run 2 miles. If your idea of societal norms is formed at Walmart a trip to a mountain town or a surf beach may alter your thinking...or not.
