Ok, sometime I think the next year I’ll probably not be any further along on this but if you had your choice, building a .358 Winchester which action would you choose and why?
I have a Mohawk in the back of the safe-I can get new stock and rebarrel to .358 win. Bottom metal/trigger all been updated.
I also have a gentry custom rifle built on a Sako AII action in 7mm08. Figured it be pretty easy to swap barrels to .358 Winchester.
Also got a model 7 tucked away that might be the “one” to go .358 on?
Any of those would be great donors for a custom, but if I had a Sako in 7-08 it wouldn't be getting anything changed. I've always thought the Sako actions were wonderful , smooth actions but heavy compared to the Model 7 or the 600...
Never underestimate your ability to overestimate your ability.
There are Remage barrels that would fit the 7 and 600 and you could build what you want at a quite a savings. I just built a 20P on a 700 and I could swap the barrel on to my 600 anytime. Nutted ba4els can be very accurate,.
If'n it was me, I prioritize your options as such: 1) Mod 7, 2) Model 600 and 3) Sako.
Only reason I put the 600 ahead of the Sako is that I've never been enamored with the Sako dovetail mount system - just me. IMHO, Sako's have always seem to tip the scales a little more than the Remingtons, which might be all bad in the .358 Win. 600s have there own 'flaws'. The most glaring is the cheap plastic floorplate/trigger guard, but that can be easily remedied. Bolt release on the 600 is a kluge, but again can be easily remedied. Scope mounts can be a little tricky on the 600 with the protruding recoil lug. Again, easily remedied if rebarreling - use a 700 recoil lug.
Current options, - stocks and scope bases, while not flooding the market, for the Mod 7 is greater than either the 600 or Sako.
FWIW, I have 3, Rem 600s and have remedied the aforementioned 'flaws' on all of them.
I never thought I'd grow up to be a grumpy old man, but I did, and I'm killin' it.
No question. Go with the Sako. Much better action, more forgiving. More aftermarket stuff for Remington, because they need it 🙄 Not a fan of the Remingtons anyway due to design & workanship. As to the 600, only Remington and the French would bend a bolt handle forward.. Quoted from my gunsmithing instructor. 😂

Definitely plus 1 re abandoning a decent 7mm 08! I can't get past that! Best! John
