I am currently looking for a Landcruiser for a hunting rig . Not looking for the FJ40 . Interested in the 60 or 80 series. Any particular model I need to stay away from ???

I've wrenched on fj 40s, fj 45s, fj 55's, fj 60s, hj 60s, hj 61s, fj 62's, fzj 80's, lx 450's, hdj 81's etc.

They're extremely expensive over american vintage 4wd iron.

The fuel economy is awful, and some of the vendors are lower-lifeform.

The finest, most useful landcruisers, are the hj 60s.

A 12ht 4 liter inline six turbo diesel, an h55 five speed manual,
and a better, full floating rear axle.

17 mpg from a 12ht. The acoustics of the engine, the feel of the driving experience, the versatity/simplicity/reliability. It's the most authentic cruiser experience out there.

They're imported into Canada from Japan on a regular basis.

You'll want to check kijijii (Canadian craigslist)

Triple locked FJ80 Good luck finding one with reasonable mines in decent shape for under $20k though.

They have jumped significantly in price in the last two years. My 94 FZJ80 is a project. For me the 80 series is the sweet spot of comfort and ruggedness. 100 series are nice to travel in though.

You may want to look at the Lexus GX470 known everywhere else in the world as a Land Cruiser Prado. Land Cruiser purest look down on them but they are a very capable vehicle for often significantly less than similar year land cruisers. Often they have been “soccer mom” vehicles and can be very clean. There is a bunch of aftermarket support for them too. With 80 series prices at $10k+ a GX470 can be a deal.

It depends on how fast you want to drive comfortably. Under 65 mph? the 60 series is pretty fool proof, carb, manual choke, crank widows, leaf springs, SFA, 4-speed manual. 62 series was essentially the same truck with fuel injection, auto trans, and power windows. Also 4 little square headlights.

Want to go 80 mph on the interstate? 80 series/ LX 450 has fuel injection, coil springs, SFA, and an overdrive auto. The early ones had the 3fe engine from the 62 series, '93 and later got the 1fz. Probably slightly more desirable than the 90-92 models with the 3fe.

Don't want to spill your latte? 100 series/LX 470 has IFS and will be the nicest offroad rig that you will never take offroad.

200 series/ LX 570 are really, really nice SUV's. Nobody even puts offroad tires on them.

Lots of imports starting to show up with diesels and other cool options that you couldn't get in America when new.

there are a few deals on 80 and 100 series out there.

Recently, we accidentally purchased a 2002 LX470. It just fell into our laps.

309k on the clock. One family owned. A stack of maintenance receipts.

Had to replace both front CV axels, front bearings, front pads, and outer tie rods.

Replaced all fluids.

Removed the soccer mom running boards, rattle canned the wheels and put some new Nokian ATs on it.

This thing rides excellent and is very capable on the FS roads we've taken it on.


All in, we're under $5k!

Be careful in the rocks, those running boards were the sacrificial offering to protect the AHC globes on the LX.

Hard to argue with some of the above!

I have owned 45, 60, 100, and 200 series.

45's are dang tough but rough riding as heck and high speed is pretty much out of the question. Nice maneuvering off road due to the smaller size (vs newer models). Power is low but put on headers, Holley carb and a performance distributer will help. Or switch to V8.

60's tough and 70-75 about fast as you will go down the interstate. Lots of cargo room and reasonably good ride for a daily driver. I like the six cylinder engine and the 4 speed transmission. Many swap the engine out for a Chevy V8. Never heard complaints about the conversion.

100 series tough too, excellent ride and engine power and good cargo area.

200 series tough but really getting expensive in this model not much better than a 100 series in my opinion.

I really like the 60 series models and they key is finding one with low mileage and no rust issues. 60 series better than 80 as the 80 series is a dog in engine performance. 60 is not a hot rod but size is better suited to that 6 cylinder engine.
