My wife came inside 20 minutes ago and said you have to hear this sound. Across the road from us, I can tell it's a deer in distress. I then see trees moving and my dog as well. . I get him away and see that the doe had been hit by a car, he just saw an easy meal that wasn't quite dead yet, so we put her down.
Unfortunately, she was nursing. I'm sure the fawn won't make it. It's amazing for so little traffic on our road but this is the 2nd deer hit in a year's time.

My old place was lousy with deer. Late spring early summer, does and fawns get bounced off Buicks almost daily.
Dumb bastards just play in the road.

You let your dog run in the roadway too?
Maybe that deer was sending you a message to keep your dog safe?

Maybe that deer was sending you a message to keep your dog safe? That was probably it. The deer across the road is what caused him to go across the road.

They are like long legged rats around here.Last fall it got so bad, bucks were chasing does around my yard. My wife got back from walking the dog about 5AM, turned the dog lose in the yard and buck deer gored it in the neck $500m vet bill. Damn things eat everything around. What they don't eat, they rub and kill.
If God wanted you to walk and carry things on your back, He would not have invented stirrups and pack saddles

Have three local fawns in & out of yard & field...... Sunday had to get one outta the damm fence... Wasn't stuck very long....ran off pretty good Ours born first week of June...eating in the fields on their own already Also had another one get bumped on the street 3 weeks ago... More deer live in the valley than do on the mountain anymore

The amount of Karens here is funny Realities differ when it comes people and their pets. I know people who's dogs have never been allowed off a leash when outside due to their dogs having zero obedience because of lack of proper training. Could be some breeds might be limited to just minor levels of training. Idunno.. Does seem many are quick to become opinionated based on their experience with their own dogs and fail to comprehend things could be quite different with others.

Have since moved, but our old place was in a suburban 25 mph zone. Over a dozen years or so we had three adult does killed by traffic at the end of our short driveway.
Cookie rescued a fawn that hung his hips up jumping a picket fence yesterday. She was walking our terrier. It was a bit of challenge, as the attending doe was intent on incorporating Fido into the pavement.

Last deer I hit was in my driveway. I was on my motorcycle and doing about 5 miles an hour. The deer, bike nor I were harmed..
On the road to my home in Montana a guy planted about 15 apple trees some 20 years back. He has about 35 or 40 acres but he put those apple trees right along the road, 6 to 10 deer die there every fall now.
Some other regular road kill locations are right in front of the homes of people that put feed out for deer, go figure.
It don't seem to matter, the deer remain thick in my area.
