It looks to be a 99EG in .300 Savage manufactured in 1940 according to the label, but I didn't get the serial number. It is drilled and tapped and has a scope mount, but no rings or scope. It is also non factory drilled as the Savage logo is on the top of the receiver ring. They are asking $850.00 and I really don't know if that is a good price. Blueing and furniture are in decent shape (some scratches, etc).I would love to get a 99 in .300 Savage as that was the first center fire gun I ever shot. What do you all think?

Seems a bit salty to me, but prices can vary quite a bit by area. Lever rifles aren't very popular around here, so they tend to go cheaper than areas where demand is higher.
I paid around $600 for my first bubba D&T EG 300 4-5 years back, and in hindsight that was high since it had bad headspace. I practically stole the 2nd one last year (not D&T) for $295 because the buttstock has a big water stain.
YMMV, but I wouldn't drop $850 on a bubba dt EG, even in today's market, since they're the most common 99 out there.

The holes don't bother me at all, but I'm not gonna pay collectors' prices for one with them.
I bought my first one with almost zero knowledge of 99s. Knowing what I do now, I probably wouldn't have paid much over $300 for it back then, since it was such a brass eater. It was a lights out shooter though, even with lousy headspace.

Thanks all for the responses,
I figured that it was a bit high, but wanted to be sure. I suppose I could see if they are up for a bit of negotiation, but after doing some research and knowing what it is, I may pass on this one. The guy I talked to also didn't know much about it, just saying, "Oh yeah, that's a really popular round for that gun." Next time I go in I'll talk to someone else and see what they say.

I just bought a 99F in 308 for $799 to fill a hole in my menagerie. Factory drilled. Not perfect but very good shape.

I dont think that $800 is fair for a drilled and tapped rifle. Especially a common variant IMHO

99s go for more than they did just three years ago. I had three EGs in 300; two 50s vintage and one prewar. I decided I didn’t need three and kept the prewar because it just had that something special. All three were/are in great shape and unaltered. Given the high price of 99s these days, 800 might put you in the ball park for a DT prewar EG in decent shape. Now I’m not arguing that what these guns are going for are worth as much as guys are getting but it does seem to be what the market is, and I am sure your LGS knows about that. But since he’s your friendly neighborhood gun grocer the first thing I would do is consider his price a dickering value and go from there. In the end it’s what you want and will pay but be sure to watch out for newbie-itis. It’s a common affliction and the symptoms are random acquisition of any old 99 in any shape simply to fulfill the fever. If you intend to collect then look smart and buy smart and a avoid any old thang that comes your way. Best of luck and have fun!

Confused. Was the 99F ever made w/o D&T?
Did Fireball buy a 300 or 308 ?

F was always factory D&T for scope.
I think Fireball meant $300.
