I would like to plan an elk hunt in an OTC area in Colorado for 2008. I know that I should have planned ahead a bit earlier, but would like any help and advice about where to start. It would be for two guys with rifles. This may be our only chance to do an elk hunt so the cost is much of a consideration. We would like a fully guided hunt. I reckon quantity would trump quality of elk as we are not extremely concerned with the trophy size as much as having the best oppurtunity at getting a shot at a decent elk. Also, we are not looking for a high fenced ranch. We would prefer packing in on horses, but not a must. Are there any recommendations as far as outfitters or areas or where to start. Thanks.

I just got back from Colorado on a 1st rifle season hunt. The outfitter we used was Lavelle Prewitt. We felt his operation was first class. His location is in south west CO near Creede and Del Norte. I'm not sure if his areas are OTC though. Give him a call and find out. Here is his web site.

Cretch,
I'm from Indy and have worked up in Winona Lake and North Manchester. How did you do out there?

Hi Marty,
Small world isn't it? I didn't get anything this time. The 2 guys I went with both scored though. One took a real nice 5x6 and the other took a smaller 5x5. There was another hunter in camp that took a 4x5. Myself and my buddy who took the 5x6 were hunting unguided. The terrain was alot of dark timber with small open parks. Some tough hunting. Even though I didn't score, it was a great hunt.
