This may be a Ford V Chevy question.

The ultimate objective is something around a .375 Whelen, with Alaska in mind.

Thanks in advance

Depends on which 70. Pre-64, no contest. Or even the later copies. All better than a Remington for that.

The W70 is a push feed. Perhaps a "black shadow" ?

If I had Alaska in mind, stainless would be a requirement. I’d prefer a M70 to a 700 in a larger caliber like you’re looking at.

I'd pick the old M70, but I always do.

I'd pump brakes, give mechanics a thunk and do it right. RPM,COAL and throat geometry matter, because they control the pulse, which is projectile viability. There's no upside to .375" on said case. Hint.

The 700 STEALS the show in COAL and such advantages go without saying...just saying. In conjunction wih same, comes a breadth of leeway in projectile selection, for the astute. Hint.

I'd want a 9" RPM RemMag Sporter-ish contour,at no more than 22",throated to kiss a 250 Skinner at 3.450"(2550fps with a .648 BC),as it'll allow wiggle room to chase lands and increase BC (285 ELD M's). Chambering obviously being 338 Twat-Six. I suffer one on a Model 70. Hint..................

For a long cartridge (over 2.5 inch case), either action is fine. For a 2.5 inch case, the pre-64 is fine. I agree with the choice of a 338 over a 375 on the '06 case but would be just as happy with a standard 338 Win Mag; on a pre-64. I have put together a fairly lightweight pre-64 M70 in 9.3x62 (not my rifle) which is a nearly perfect rifle, for heavy game, if one is not one of those looking to try long shots. The same rifle in 338-06 would be very good too. GD

For a Std. length action - the M700 will have a longer magazine.

It allows one to long-load the cartridge, especially if the throat is long as well.

DumbDog,

Your sheer and utter fhuqking CLUELESSNESS never disappoints in it's Magnificent Grandeur...you "lucky" kchunt. Hint. Congratulations?!?

Pre-64's are piles of fhuqking schit and COAL trite,if only HILARIOUSLY. Now if you load good bullets backwards or are gunning Wadcutters, they make a nice "choice". Hint. Fhuqking LAUGHING!

I've never seen a .532" Pre-64 ."458" marked receiver that'd eat 3.400" COAL rounds. 'Course,neither have you. The Pre-64 "full length" H&H Magnum Receiver/boxes are paltry too(amidship),as compared to something as obvious as a 700 L/A(whether .473" or .532"). Hint.

[Linked Image from imagizer.imageshack.com]

It is FUNNIER than fhuqk,to "recommend" a fhuqking receiver that has less than .900" of COAL available from casemouth, for any/all chamberings thus far cite. Nawwwww...it's wayyyyyy fhuqking FUNNIER than that and only because you are doing your fhuqking BEST. Hint.

Fhuqking LAUGHING!.................

BluC,

With my controlled-round feed M70, I got it long-throated and after removing the spacer in the mag. I seat at 3.51" for the .338 Win Mag. One advantage of the M70 is magazine capacity and also the magazine is deeper at the rear than the front, so belted cartridges stack nicely in it. With a heavy caliber, you're more likely to use it on game that fights back, so I prefer CRF for .338 and up.

My pre-war receiver will absolutely not accept 3.400 OAL cartridges. It will accept 3.365 OAL cartridges and that is perfectly adequate for my requirements. If I wanted to load very long, high BC bullets in my 338, I would choose a longer action; like a 700 or Post-64 Model 70. I don't care to though. If I want to shoot very long, high BC bullets, I have 6.5's I can do that in. My 338 is intended as a hunting rifle with which I can shoot elk at reasonable ranges and it will do that with 225 grain bullets. Likewise, I find 180's to be just fine in the 308 Norma. If I see the elk at 600 yds, I'll try to get closer. If I can't, I'll try again tomorrow. GD

DumbDog,

Of course they will NOT,as cited plainly and sub 3.400" COAL "latitude" is funnier than fhuqk...you "lucky" kchunt. Hint. Congratulations?!?

Flipside being a Rem 700 25-06 has 3.690". Let that marinate. Hint.

What 225 and at what velocity are you Dreaming about? What scope/mounting system. Dangle a picture of said piece of fhuqking schit. Dare ya'. Hint.

Nextly, what 180 and at what velocity are you Dreaming about? What scope/mounting system. Dangle a picture of said piece of fhuqking schit. Dare ya'. Hint.

Your 600yds,is another's 60yds. Read that again. Now one more time. Hint.

Fhuqking LAUGHING!...................

Stickly,
The 225's are Sierras and Nosler partitions. Velocity is about 2850. The 225 Sierras are a run made for Federal (flat base). The rifle is a pre-war receiver with a post-war bolt (The original bolt was lost in a fall off a mountain in Alberta in 1964). Original stock. Scope is a 2.5 Leupold M-8 in Weaver rings. Barrel is a ten twist Shilen, #3+, 24 inches long.
The Norma is the same rifle with a barrel and scope switch. This barrel is a Sako 10 twist ( I think it is actually a 26mm), also 24 inches long. Velocity is 3070 + or - with any one of a half dozen 180's on the shelf. The scope is a 4x Bushnell Scope Chief. All pretty old school stuff eh?
A third barrel is a 7mm Rem.
I have another pre-war which is whatever I want it to be, based on a 30/06 head. It has two stocks and is usually a prone rifle in 30/06 or a MS rifle in 308. I have a Model 54 which is an eight twist 256 Newton with a 6x scope.
I have a Remington model 30 action waiting in the wings. It is a 30/06 action but I may open the bolt for a 30 Newton. Again, pretty old school stuff because I'm kind of an old guy.
Like I said, if I wanted to load longer, I would get an action with a longer magazine but I'm OK the way they are. GD

DumbDog,

I stand corrected,your 600yds is another's 6yds...you "lucky" kchunt. Hint. Congratulations?!?

Your wagon load of fhuqking Dog Schit, can't keep pace with a 21" 7-08. Hint.
