The Brit’s fought like hell I doubt modern weaponry short of napalm would have done them any better
A few gatling guns would have allowed the British to mow down a few more attackers.
If they had had breech loading artillary with canister and/or grapeshot they would have been able to mow down a few more attackers.
Plus, the quartermaster wouldn't issue ammo quickly enough.
The British invasion force had two field guns and a rocket battery at Isandhlwana, but the British forces were spread out, caught by surprise, split up and quickly overrun.
At Rorke's Drift the defenders had time to prepare their defences, and also had the advantage that, because it was a supply depot, they had large quantities of mealie bags and biscuit tins with which to construct ramparts (assisted by the use of ox drays and existing structures), and vast quantities of ammunition. They also were much more tightly deployed, making it easier to concentrate fire and bayonets, and to get ammunition and water to the line. Still and all it was a near-run thing, and a testament to the bravery on both sides.
Zulu and the "prequel", Zulu Dawn, are both great movies IMHO. Yes, there are some historical inaccuracies, but I've happily watched them both more times than I can name.
I've probably watched Zulu the most of any of my favorites, certainly more than half a dozen times. I didn't see it on TV all cut up first for whatever reason. My first viewing was in college at the last of the decent neighborhood theatres with a big screen and decent sound back in the late-70s. It blew me away. It is a flick that really needs to be seen on a big screen to be fully appreciated.
I recently watched this:
One thing that I learned years ago: There weren't enough Zulus around to satisfy the call for extras, so they nailed silhouettes and shields to boards and had 2 extras hoist them up in the big scene at the top of the hill. Once you know this, you can't unsee it.
Never was one to like the Brits, but it took some balls to stand and face that horde. I always look for Kaywoodie in that line of bayonets.
LOL! Don’t look for me in that thin red line of bayonets! I was on the other side of the field with Old Hickory behind the Rodriguez canal and cotton bales! 😉👍😁
