I do wish that gal had slammed that thing against the concrete walkway while it had ahold of her hand/arm. and then given it a good stomp on the ribs/backbone. They'd have found it dead nearby, if not right there.

Hope she's OK after this.

Damn chicken eaters.

Really? Why not?

I know kudu get rabies so I figured anything could...
Their body temperature is too low for the virus to live.
I should say it's pretty rare for one to get it.

Do Opossums Carry Diseases?

Though it’s unlikely for them to transmit rabies, opossums can sometimes carry harmful germs and pathogens that cause diseases such as leptospirosis. Transmitted through contaminated urine or other bodily fluids from an infected animal, this bacterial disease can impact humans and wildlife. Raccoons, skunks, deer, squirrels and rodents can all be infected without any true signs.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some people who contract leptospirosis may not have symptoms, but others could have nonspecific flu-like symptoms that usually resolve without medical treatment. Sometimes, however, symptoms reappear and can lead to more severe diseases. To prevent the spread of leptospirosis from wildlife, avoid swallowing water from lakes, rivers or swamps, and steer clear of environments potentially contaminated with animal urine.

I hope she recovers physically and mentally...both traumas.
The rabies shots have changed no more injections in the stomach, One RIG shot to the bite sight and a series of inter muscular in the arm. The old Pasture treatment was a bitch. Those of us who handle animals that are potential carriers can get immunized good insurance as it is not always obvious and a little saliva in a cut or scratch could be enough. Rabies is not a good way to go out.

Shots are not painful. 1 in each shoulder, 1 in each butt cheek, 1 in each thigh. Repeat like 4 times. I started feeling a little crappy by the 4th round but no big deal. Upon completion, it you get but again, you just get a booster.

I had a rabid black lab get me in my driveway while getting in the truck. He was real wise to the dog catcher and would haul ass from my yard as soon as she came around the corner. Dickhead was living in my flower bed after he bit me so I tried to poison him twice within luck. Finally talked to the dog catcher on one of her visits and asked her why she just couldn't shoot the dog. Said she would lose her job but since I had already been bit, I could shoot him with no consequences. I told her to come back in an hour and pick him up. Sure as hell, when she left, he went right back to the flower bed and I shot him. I think I was on my second round of shots by this time and she said they would send the head to Richmond. I was hoping to get quick results to see if I had to continue with the shots. I finished up the shots and got the results back from the city 3 months later stating I had to get the rabies shot as the results were positive. I was like damn, I would have probably been dead if I waited 3 months.

That was a grey fox, not a red. They are two totally different animals and it isn't just color. Reds are typically timid and shy but those greys are mean little buggers. She was doing good until she grabbed it with her arm. Had she just rolled it over and and lifted the neck real quick it would have been all over.

Those video's look more like Canine Distemper than rabies to me.

Why? I know they use the brain to test for the disease, but would it matter if it was a shot brain or not?
It not a “scoop” of brain material that is used to test.

The brain is necropsied to take samples of the pons, hippocampus, and cerebellum. The samples are trimmed and used to make touch-impression slides for determination.

When I worked in the rabies lab in Fairbanks, some of the dead animals were as much as a week+ In a plastic bag or tossed aside somewhere. A partially decomposed or shot brain makes IDing structure extremely difficult.
I see, thanks.

Had a couple of buddies bitten-by vampire bats down in Panama during JOTC over the years. They used-to have-to take shots to the gut, and they told me it was painful. I think the treatment has changed over the years.

[bleep] vampire bats .... i used-to hate those [bleep] things.

I see about 50/50 reds and greys here with only 1 cross. We have at least as many wolves as fox here too.

I was nipped on the hand by either a full grown mink or a partially grown otter? I didn’t get a rabies shot because I was pretty sure that it was after the trout in my hand that I was reviving in a river and bit me by mistake.

It was the Firehole River inside of Yellowstone NP. I caught several trout casting across the river to the same few downed trees and was reviving one to release when something shot out from upstream just below the water under the same side of the bank that I was on. I only saw a shadow out of the corner of my eye until it was a few feet away. It nipped me enough to leave a minor cut as I tried to pull my hands away. Probably the most bizarre thing by a long shot to have had happen to me while outdoors.

The first shot is into the open wound. Follow up shots are in the arm. Not as bad as it used to be. But crazy expensive. A full regimen of rabies shots will run nearly $30,000. I have to pay for these all the time in dog bite cases I handle and see the medical reports. Better have health insurance if you need these.
