I would choose an M1 Garand. Oh dear God. After it’s done going *bang* and it goes *ping* it makes a helluva good club.

Mini 14.
A friend gave some steal cased ammo, his AR wouldn’t eat it. My Mini ate, no problem. That’s funny. Never got issued steel cases ammo in the military for my M16. To the OP, I’d go with an AR. The AK may be more reliable if you throw it in a pond and drag it back out, but a well maintained AR is a very good weapon. That’s partially why our troops have been using the M16 for 60 years. The beauty of tue AR is swapping out uppers IMO. Now if you really want to get your chit right, invest in night vision.

Anyone not recognizing this, has never shot one or been shot at with a Garand. All the commies running around shooting AK’s would learn soon enough how much they are outgunned by the Garand when they get shot at ranges their AK’s can’t handle. Aimed shots with a semi auto will always trump spry and pray with a full auto… Precise shooting is great, but not always plausible. Sometimes you’re shooting where you think they are. Or maybe they are behind cover while your team moves and you hold them down. The Garand is a beautiful weapon! But she’s runs out too damn fast. 8 rounds doesn’t last long and the ammo is bulky and heavy. You can outfit an AR to shoot accurately to distances just as far as any Garand, if not further with modern optics that you can’t put on a Garand. And you can get an AR chambered in cartridges that will retain velocity and energy much farther than a 5.56. 6.5 Grendel or 6ARC come to mind.

I have been shooting my Belgian FN/FAL for over 42 years, it has never failed to feed, fire, and eject properly. 20 rounds of .308 and an instant reload is Firepower.
I then got a Venezuelan contract FN49 in 7 x 57. Internal 10 round mag and top loaded by 5 round stripper clips. Faster than a mag change. Just as reliable as the FAL, but less recoil.
I also shoot my Colt AR-15 for the last 50 years, it never failed me. My back up gun for 25 years in Honolulu PD.

My Mini 30 hangs up every so often with steel cased ammo, never with brass cased.

Colt 6920, Bravo Company REECE, DDM4V7, or Sig MCX would be more inline what I would choose for a defensive carbine than many of the responses in this thread. I would recommend that you (as well as many others in this thread making ridiculous suggestions) take a defensive carbine course. Good choices will seem obvious after a bit of training. Had not considered a defensive carbine course. I have seen all three John Wick movies so I have pretty good jump start on the theory end. Do any outfits offer a straight to Level II option?

+1 Although my BCM's have been rock solid. I just haven't put as many rounds through them as I have the 6920s.

If you are not actively engaging EVERY enemy you encounter... you are allowing another to fight for you... and that is cowardice... plain and simple.

I can't think of anything more dependable than a Leupold topped Wyoming arms AR.

If one were serious about a defensive/home defense rifle, I don't understand why, in this day and age, he would consider anything but an M4 configured AR from a top-notch outfit. Feed it right, shoot it a lot, keep it clean and take care of it and don't dick around with it trying this and that gizmo or "improvement".

More rounds is always a plus, but shooting to miss or scare someone is what creates the waste of fire that seems to be the common practice today. Besides that, a 150 grain bullet traveling in the direction of the subject, is more likely to penetrate more to get to the intended victim. This was discussed as a semi auto rifle and you have turned it into an armed conflict which is indicative of a full auto rifle for collateral damage. I am still a fan of the Garand, but I will admit an AR 15 without a rail and a chainsaw on it, becomes a more practical defense gun if you want the most rounds per pound…

Yeah, Colt 6920. For 7.62, ARMALITE. 25 rds. For 7.62 x 39, mid to late 50s Russian, mid 60s era Chinese SKS. Low capacity, but never ANY issue.
Don't ask me about my military service or heroic acts...most of it is untrue.
