Hello All
Has anyone ever handled or fired a rifle so chambered? Bertram still makes brass and Woodleigh makes a correctly sized bullet. Have seen few pieces written on this cartridge mostly commenting on the realativly soft 347gr bullet originaly loaded in it.

Nelson, A good friend who asisted me during my brown bear season was carrying one. he was using 347 gr Woodleighs @ 2200fps and the 375 Ruger I was carrying was throwing 350 Woodleigh bullets @ 2260fps.
His rifle was a virtual reproduction of an original Mauser sporter with an original 1916 half octagonal Mauser sporter barrel. It was a lightweight, powerful rifle.

It's a .404 Jeffery Light. Same diameter bullets, just 50 grains lighter in standard loads. Fits better in a standard length action.

I have a Jeffery, and I want a 10.75x68. I shoot 400's at 2300 fps in my Jeffery; I can't fathom how an equally constructed 350 at 2250 fps would demonstrate any diminished lethality.

Thanks guys for the info. The pieces of written info I've read didn't list any technical info just that the 347gr bullet was considered a little soft for Ivory hunting (not on my list of things to do), or stopping a charging Buff.

If your looking to build one my smith has the reamer. I was going to build one but went with a 404. Still may build one in time. I just think it is a cool round.

I have built a couple of them and have hunted one time in Africa with one..Its balistics are the same as the "original ballistics" of the .404 Jefferys, but won't match todays loads in a 404 Jefferys...

I liked the 350 gr. Barnes X at 2350 FPS and the 400 gr. Woodleighs at 2150 FPS...both do the job.

It makes a nice light to carry rifle, and real nice to shoot, but brass can be a problem and in the end its like a wildcat, not very practical so I sold them and went back to using my .375 H&H and 416 Rem..
