Showing on TCM at 8:00 Eastern.

I'll watch it just to see Slim Pickens - a funny name for a man we all miss very much.

My first cousin piloted BUFF’s for two tours in Nam and then came home and flew nukes for SAC. He always remarked at how close the movie “got it”. Not a perfect rendition but close.

The movie depicted what he referred to as a No Callback order. He was in on one of those one time after a simple (?) blunder at SAC hq when a group of Senators was visiting and an AF guy apparently pushed the wrong button showing Senators how it was done. Wow.

They eventually got the B-52’s to return after the Sec of Defense got on and told them to come back, per his story. All but one…just like Slim Pickins. They scrambled fighters and they fired missles in front of the jet, telling him the “next missle would be up your ass”. He came on back. My cousin and his pilot buddies all got (go figure) letters of reprimand in their files for disobeying the no callback, excepting Slim, who did as he was supposed to. Naturally they went through the motions of the letters and after it was all over, removed them from their files.

I resigned from active duty to keep from being a B-52 Instructor Pilot. I had never flown anything bigger than an AT-33, but "once an instructor, always an instructor" according to AF Personnel. Stayed in the Reserves, but never flew again.

Turned out for the best. I parlayed three years flying a D4D (Desk, Four Drawer) into my job at NASA.

Being an unbiased retired Army aviator from that era, apropos of nothing what so ever, I thought Slim Pickens portrayed not only B-52 jocks but also the FACs back then smile

You do know that he thought the movie was serious at the time of filming didn’t you? Little known fact. They never let on to Slim that it was a political satire, or whatever you call it. He played the part dead serious
