I have done a lot of hiking throughout MT from Gates of the Mountains to the CM Russell Wildlife Management Area, to places around Helena and Livingston.
When it comes to .45s for the trail, a Glock 21 is not a bad choice in terms of weight and capacity. Fully loaded with 13+1 rounds of ammo it weighs less than a steel framed 1911 does empty.
Very easy to shoot quickly too.
The HK USP is never a bad choice either when it comes to a well built polymer framed gun
That said, I still tend to carry a steel framed 1911 quite often for day hikes where weight is not a major concern. It is a gun that can do double duty as a CCW piece if I need to run into town later and grab dinner or groceries.
A 5" Government Model tends to get used pretty frequently in the summer when it comes to hiking in yogi country.
Lots of good .45 semi autos out there, and using the 250 grain +P 45 ACP flat point, getting over 3 FEET of penetration in 20% gel, I feel fairly well armed.
BTW, I will be doing another run shortly. I think I have 2-300 rounds on hand at the moment.
