I bought a used Remington VSSF several years ago, rifle shot well but always questioned the appearance of the flutes. They are very rough, not like any fluted Remington I've ever seen. I switched the barrel out to a Calhoon19/223, thinking of selling it and will include the 223 barrel, just want to get opinions on the flutes before I put it out there.. Looking for thoughts and if anyone else has seen fluting like this before, thanks in advance for your input.
The schit twist rate ain't gonna do any favors though. Hint..................

I have one on my 223 AI and I've seen many more and none of them had other than excellent machining on them. Yours looks like it was done with a dull file chucked in a drill press.... I can't understand how that got out the door if it was indeed the original VSSF barrel or if some shadetree gunsmith attempted to create his own VSSF barrel in a home work shop.... and a piss poor attempt at that
This one listed on gunbroker is typical of a factory VSSF . Notice the lettering location and spacing on the barrel...

I agree it looks like [bleep], curious if anyone else had ever seen anything like it. I think its a 1:12, I only shot 55's which shot well. Funny thing, when I switched the barrel to the 19/223 PacNor I mentioned I was doing this on the forum here and you sent me a PM asking me if I was going to sell the barrel you were interested in it, LOL Remington had it's moments just cannot believe this came from the factory like that. Thanks
Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time.
OEM fluting,in which someone blasted the channels and then polished the outer circumference. It's been done often. Hint..............

Possible, pics don't show it but look like weld splatter, the texture is proud of the flute not recescessed like you would expect if it was sandblasted. I'll try to get a better pic and post tomorrow. Thanks

Looks to me like somebody was using a dull cutter, feed rate was too fast, and he didn't know how to use a mill in the first place... the tear out on the bottom of the cut and the wandering flute are all signs of a these issues...
