Red Rock Canyon Natl. Conservation Area, the eastern front of the Spring Mountains. Ever been there?
Not many out-of-towners know how close we are to some beautiful mountain scenery. Many think there's nothing but barren desert around Vegas.
We got a good rain last night and the valley cooled off considerably.

Been there but don't really remember it! How about some cool air up on Mt Charleston? I about froze my young ass off up there one night. Good lighting with the clouds BTW.

Drove up to Mount Charleston once. Nice drive and a cool break from the desert basins.

Lived in Vegas for about six months in 1974. We took the kids out there for a picnic one day. It seems to look the same. Good memory. Cell phone or camera those are good photos. Thanks for posting.

One of my favorite places. Some of the best rock I’ve ever been on. I’ve spent a bunch of time there. I’ve climbed and hiked all over that area. I usually park at the Calico Basin and trek to wherever I wanna go from there. I’ve found many petroglyphs and some pictographs out there too. I’ve climbed Turtlehead Peak many times. I’ve trekked up in Oak Creek Canyon and Pine Creek Canyon and climbed North Peak and Bridge Mountain…and seen Bighorn sheep up in there (it’s pretty flippin’ rough up in and on those two mountains). Climbing up into Calico Tanks…and makin’ my own way…from Calico Basin is pretty cool. I’ve also seen Bighorn sheep many times on Kraft Mountain. I’ll sometimes use Gateway Canyon as a way to get from Calico Basin further up into that country, sometimes going out to and around the Kraft Boulders and trekkin’ up through the backside to do it. I like to go where there aren’t any trails out there quite a bit and have explored so many areas out there doin’ just that, especially by climbing up into that great rock out there. Lotta canyons and cuts in the rock to climb up on and through. There’re also some sites in there that Indians long ago used for roasting agave.

Great pics dude. Thanks for postin’ em’ up. It’s nice to come back to a sweet room in Vegas and take a hot shower with body jets after a full day of climbin’ and hikin’ in Red Rock or Valley of Fire, then eat some good grub, then set up shop in the hot tub and drink for a good bit. Then sleep well before you get up and do it some more the next day.

My daughter and her family just moved from Vegas a few months after Strek finished his assignment at Nellis. One or two trios a week out there whenever we visited since it was only 15 minutes from the house. Red Rock, Mt. Charleston and Valley of Fire we’re all frequent places we went. With their new assignment at USAFA for the next three years we will switch to Garden of the Gods and stuff along the eastern front during this next assignment.

Be sure to check out the Red Rock Canyon Open Space just south of Garden of the Gods too. It’s part of the same formation, and there’s some really good trekkin’ and climbin’ up in there. Plus you can access a bunch of other country from there too.

Wife and I went there in '99 (honeymoon). I'm not a gambler, so the city of LV didn't impress me, but Red Rock, with it's bands of wild burros, Mt. Charleston, and Hoover Dam - those places left a lasting impression on me.

My wife was a blackjack dealer there in the late 1980's, a casino outside of town called Whiskey Pete's.
