Bought a well done 270-4000 Newton done up on a P-17 action.
Surprise the bore looks new as does the rest of the rifle.
Bought some 30 Newton brass (made from 375 Rugers), a set of 30 Newton dies and a set of 270 WSM dies.
FL sized cases in Newton dies and necked them down in WSM dies.
They would not chamber w/o a rubber mallet.
3 hours later established that I have a very tight chamber in the body portion and my C&H dies are not that small.
Now to drag out the bore scope and look at chamber. I'll never find a 270-4000 finish reamer, so it looks like lapping/polishing will be the cure.
In the same shipment my 1905 Ross in 280 Ross arrived. My 3rd try and finally one with an excellent bore.
Now to figure out how to scope it (no rear receiver ring). Probably go with a G&H.

Thanks for your interest.
Yes, chambered and empty after FL body sizing several times.
Took a rubber mallet to close the bolt.
After lots of inspection, concluded My C&H die is not as small as the chamber in the case body area.
Been talking with Zeglin on solutions.
Looks like lapping the chamber may be the way out.
Chamber cast and new dies would cost more than I paid for the rifle ! (<$200)

Company called Brush ( www.brushresearch.com) makes hones in every size. Bought several and honed out the front 1/2 of the chamber. Cases start as 375 Ruger, made into 30 Newton and necksized to 270 in a 270 WSM die. Now they chamber with a bit of effort but drop out after 80% load fireforming. Now to try and work up a load. 270-4000 Hoffman and 300 WinMag.

And here's the 200 buck rifle (scope not included). With full loads, think 270 BEE, it's not fun to shoot. Working up some loads based on modest 270 WCF data. Fun to get an old horse out of the stable.
