We have hummingbird moths here. They are AWESOME!
I think you're right. Guy down the street raises 'em. They call him Buffalo Bill.

Ask an Entomologist and He’ll say it is definitely a white lined sphinx moth Hyles lineata. It’s a sphinx moth no question, the Family is Sphingidae, common names include hawk moth, hummingbird moth. There are as many as 75 species in North America. I’m sure this one is the white lined sphinx.

We too call them humming bird moths, but that's not the proper name
Hyles lineata, also known as the white-lined sphinx

Seems late in the year. Sphinx moths overwinter as pupae and there’s nothing in the literature about them migrating south. Doesn’t seem like there’s much chance of late-summer emerging ones like this to reproduce.

I've seen 'em here in coastal AK. Got pics and video. I definitely did a double-take, thinking it was a baby hummer . . . until I saw the proboscis.

Yep hummingbird moth, saw my first last year, pretty cool to watch and have to tell people coming around not to swat it with their hats.
