The Mefoto Daytrip tripod has always worked well for me.

I'm of the view carbon fiber tripods are essentially a waste of money. There are plenty of mechanically comparable aluminum tripods that are equally light (or lighter) and cost less than CF. And CF requires twist-lock rather than lever leg tighteners. I really dislikes twist tighteners. Brad, I recently purchased a carbon fiber tripod with lever locks. I actually bought the lever lock and twist lock versions of the same model. So I don't think carbon fiber requires twist locks, it just seems that the manufacturers have gone that direction. The lever lock version is substantially heavier as well. Jason

The discontinued SLIK 824. The CF version (twist) from CameraLandNY and CFL version (lever) from Sportsmans. I think that both vendors bought the remaining stock for each model. Neither are what I would consider super lightweight, but at the upper end of what I would want to pack.
I actually prefer lever locks over twist myself. Although they might be more prone to squeak and need a tool for adjustment, they are just a simple double clamp design from what I have seen. The twist locks tend to rely on a metal outsert that gets glued to the carbon shaft. If the glue fails, then you're out of luck.
I suspect that many tripod manufacturers are simply trying to game the spec sheets. Twist locks are lighter. And to get a taller advertised extended height, some use shallower leg angles.

At 30 oz, the 624 is going to be hard to beat without giving up stability IMO. Not sure but something inside me tells me this is sound advice. I'm 6-1 my kid 6-4 extended is when sht really wobbles. Thanks for the suggestion.
