Dunno why. Works well, machines well, makes good pens, bowls, gunstocks, tables, dressers, etc. I like working with all types of wood, but I always seem to gravitate back.

Haven't touched the lathe in almost 2 months, but got out there tonight and whipped some stuff up.

The bowl is a piece of knotty walnut I found laying around, and the pen is a piece of crotch I got in a bundle from an estate sale awhile back. Neither are stained, or dyed in any way, they were that dark and that curly right out of the tree.

I just completed making seventeen walnut picture frames which will become Christmas gifts. Each will be woodcarved with the recipient's name, the year, and will contain an appropriate photo. The wood is spangled with red, brown, grey, and black. It can be cut, carved, sanded, and finished with ease with beauty as an unmatchable result. I can't say the same for plastic or kevlar, (although some of my gun stocks are of those materials). I confess that during the long hours of sitting in the woods waiting for hunting action, the walnut lines, swirls, and knots on my gun stocks have been a pleasant diversion.
