That song could be sung today. It is a classic, I loved it then and still love it today…

Couple from Roger. Seems everyone knew the lyrics back then:

The desert is a true treasure for him who seeks refuge from men and the evil of men.
In it is contentment
In it is death and all you seek

That would have been some good deals.

I wasn't even born in the 60's, but I certainly know the answer.

My roommate Jim, had a draft notice, and so joined the Navy when in college doing a 6 year tour. In 1974 at age 29 he returned to finish out his senior year. He knew I liked Alice's Restaurant, and some of Arlo's other stuff. When it was Thanksgiving, the campus was closed for the week, and I had no where locally to go. My folks were living in Hawaii, the old man stationed at Hickham, closest relatives were back home in Virginia, so he invited me out to the Berkshires for the week.

Day after Thanksgiving, he took me by an old church about a mile from his place, and asked me if it looked familiar. It did but I couldn't place it...
It was the church from Alice's Restaurant. Then he said, we were going over to visit an old friend from school. Old New England House, built in the late 1700s, and old vintage Mercedes and a couple of older eclectic type cars.. and the lawn needed mowing. Knocked on the door and there is this old Black Butler. He knew Jim real well, spoke of being happy to see him, then he said he would check with "the master" to see if he was accepting guests.

He comes back, opens the front door to let us in, and I hear "Heeeeyyyyy Jimmie!!!" IN comes Arlo Guthrie stoned out of his mind. Jim introduces me, as his roommate at college, Arlo grabs my hand and shakes it profusely with "HHHHeeeyyy Johnnie! Glad to meet ya!"

Offered us the chance to hit the bong, but Jim and I passed... Arlo didn't. He was a cool host tho... but definitely needed a bath and a clean set of clothes...

At one time, I had the whole +/- 19 minutes of Alice's Restaurant committed to memory.

Due to a change in lifestyle, I did not do any 'concerts' between 1976 and when I saw Arlo Guthrie in 2015 at his 50th Anniversary "Alice's Restaurant' Tour at the 1894 Grand Theater in Galveston, Tx. A venue that holds 800 or so folk IIRC.

He pretty much told the story of his life from 1965 to at that time the present day. I came away with an different view and an new appreciation of the man. But it's late and that is a story for another time.
