Coolio was a cut above your average idiot rapper.

“I wasn’t looking for a career, I was looking for a way to clean up – a way to escape the drug thing,” he told the Times. “It was going to kill me and I knew I had to stop. In firefighting training was discipline I needed. We ran every day. I wasn’t drinking or smoking or doing the stuff I usually did.”

I can’t recall a single curse in his tunes.

RIP Artis Leon Ivey Jr.

A few of his songs are a little "explicit" though.

The desert is a true treasure for him who seeks refuge from men and the evil of men.
In it is contentment
In it is death and all you seek

Well, that does suck. However, in his song he says he didn't think he would make it past 23.. "Death ain't nothing but a heartbeat away"...

All of the usual wisecracks about rappers aside, as he was a firefighter he was my brother.

Rip on em all I want, I cannot imagine growing up like most have, with 60% or more of their community growing up without fathers or a solid familial environment. The fact that any of the rappers and their ilk amount to anything is incredible. Rest in Peace, Coolio!
