Question for any Canadians who purchased firearms in the US or citizens of the US who are familiar with their state laws on selling guns to Canadians. I live in Manitoba and travel to North Dakota and Minnesota occassionally. I was told by a fellow at Cabelas in East Grand Forks that they will not sell firearms to Canadians, and I am not sure why. Is this a fact? What about North Dakota? Since the Canadian dollar is so close, it is economical to purchase rifles in the states.

On the federal form for a firearms purchase, one of the questions is: Are you a citizen of the USA or a legal resident of the USA.

The answer must be yes for the sale to proceed. Federal law precludes the sale of firearms to nonresident aliens.

If you are not US citizen, you may purchase a long gun if you meet the following criteria:

1. You are a legal immigrant and posess a green card.

2. You can provide proof of residence at the same US address for the 90 days immediately proceeding the sale. (rent reciepts, utility bills, etc.)

3. You can produce a state issued picture ID. (driver license, passport, etc.)

4. You can truthfully answer NO to the disqualifying questions on the 4473 form.

5. You pass the NICS (or state agency) background check.

You cannot purchase a firearm in the US if you don't reside in the US.

Actually the only gun Saddam ever bought in the western hemisphere, he bought FROM a Canadian. The Bull Howitzer.
