When I was going to sea in tugs in the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean, a bad forecast, sinking barometer and a thousand miles to shelter...fear was my worst enemy. The harsh realization that your fate is determined by isobar lines on a map. The pretty pictures of a tug with the bone in her teeth on a sunshiny day clashes sharply with the reality of a tug in winter Gulf of Alaska, where occasionally when in the trough you can't see the top of the next one coming. The sight of a survival suit still gives me the willies. Fortunately weather forecasting is much better now, and seldom does a prudent skipper 'get caught'.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

Not falling into a wood chipper bad, but it hurt a little.
Not as bad as the one I shot into my knee though.

I roll up big rolls of paper or coated fiberglass, the machine runs
100 yards/minute at top speed. I often stand there and feel the top of the
roll rolling up for defects or wrinkles. If clothing or my hand got in the
bottom of the roll, there ain't no getting it back.

Previous job hauling gasolene, never worried me.
Figured if I went out at least I'd make the news.
Before that I hauled hot blacktop to job sites.
325 degrees behind me in a dump truck. Often thought of a wreck
causing me to bake to death..

To many variables, from killing people to crashing the World economy immediately.

But it's all relative. Most of the time I consider it a bad "day" when I don't get to sleep for a couple of them.

An aircraft crashing with one of the units I support aboard. The Kobe Bryant crash gave me a real queasy feeling for a couple of weeks.

If one of the stamping press operators crashes one of the dies really bad. That can mean a couple days making a part or parts and heat treating and cutting down to correct size. Also when someone messes up a part off a machine from one of the production lines.

Not there anymore, but suicide by train was bad. Someone would step in front of us and end up as pink mist and chunks on the windshield. Then fire, emts, police and usually the family showed up. When you are forced to be witness and executioner against your will, never good. I have seen careers end because of it.

Retired now, but when I was working, a power outage was the worst. I was a Maintenance Technician at a large printing company. A power outage would cause weak electronic components and drives to fail. Sometimes the plant would experience single phasing which would make it 10 times worse. It would sometimes take days to get everything back up and running. Every time we get a bad storm now, I sit at home and just smile and thing of the poor bastards still there dealing with the chaos.

On the discussion of pain.

When I crushed my face coming off a painting ladder. Having a ENT doc shoot 9 injections into my face and inside my nose cavity, was so much fun.
