I was albacore fishing a couple weeks ago and we have to dodge Mola Mola from time to time. I was talking to a charter skipper out of Ketchikan at the docks and he said there was a Sunfish in Clarence Straits a couple years back.

Has anyone out of Craig or anywhere in SE gone out for tuna this year? A few years ago I recall there were some guys running offshore for albacore.

Yea
Several boats from Craig went out chasing albacore
A couple boys did well with one landing 31 I think
By the time I could get out (a week or so later) the water temps had cooled a little and we only landed two
Still a fun trip though for a change of pace

I saw a sunfish several years ago maybe 30 miles out from noyes island
It was just cruising on the surface at an angle with its top fin partially out of the water
Big fish

That’s cool you guys are getting them up there. How far are you having to run to get into the fish?

Remains have been found quite a few times on Kodiak. One year they found one at the head of Ugak Bay and another at the head of Terror Bay... basically just over the mountain.

There have been too many found over the years... they just follow the Japan Current.

Well alrighty then.... the only thing I know about sunfish are the panfish we use to catch as kids the lakes in the midwest. This must be something else.
Still waiting for tuna to hit the gulf....!

They have recorded Mola to over 5,000 pounds. Top speed is 2mph. No ponds needed.

You can tell who has spent as much or more time on the water as on land. Anyone that has spent much time at sea knows that virtually nothing is impossible.

Lol….there are more fish than warm water panfish. I’ve never seen a sunfish that didn’t weigh over 500 pounds and most went over 1500 pounds…..that’s a big ass pumpkin seed. 😂

Another Sunfish had been found in Cordova 6 or 7 years ago. In reference to the currents Kayak Island was a prime spot to find Glass fishing floats, I’ve gathered back pack full of Glass Balls from the beach in 69 and 70 when the ship resupplied the light.

We hit one (that was apparently sunning on its side on the surface) in a 25-foot boat 70-mile offshore - autopilot was on and didn't see him until just before hitting him - probably was 6-7 foot in length. Was like hitting a log; even though the outboards kicked up it really tore him up. He had huge eyes.
