Wish I had known that in '10 when Riley and I brought a Nordic Tug from Juneau to Whittier. Would have been a good time to look.

There have been too many found over the years... they just follow the Japan Current.
Well alrighty then.... the only thing I know about sunfish are the panfish we use to catch as kids the lakes in the midwest. This must be something else.
Still waiting for tuna to hit the gulf....!

Lol….there are more fish than warm water panfish. I’ve never seen a sunfish that didn’t weigh over 500 pounds and most went over 1500 pounds…..that’s a big ass pumpkin seed. 😂

It was no blessing when they showed up down here between Pt St George and Cape Blanco a few years ago. Herring and anchovies disappeared, krill became non existent within 2 days. Kings and Silvers of course disappeared with the bait balls. Rockfish, lings and halibut went on a sick out, you could snag one, but they wouldn't bite. We saw sea surface temps as high as 59 deg.

Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

I stopped doing that one after hooking a 10lb carp and a 15lb channel cat on the same trip. Barely kept my cane pole form breaking! I need the drag to land the big ones.

Mola mola (ocean sunfish) drift on the currents hoovering up jellyfish fish. They have a big dorsal fin but it just flops from side to side as they drift on the surface.

I’ve heard that they’re full of parasites and wholly inedible but I’m sure somewhere in Asia land it’s a delicacy. 😁

Casting for salmon from my kayak in Nootka Sound off Vancouver Island, I snagged a sunfish weighing an estimated 35 lbs. Released it.

In the late 70’s was skin diving off the beach north of the L.A. County line when a bunch of sunfish came in near shore. As I was looking right, one about 200 lbs. or more sidled up CLOSE on my left side and scared the daylights out of me. I had shark on the brain, natch, and this massive grey wall suddenly was within touching distance. I wrenched a back muscle turning to face it. I had a big spear gun for halibut or hopefully an albacore tuna but didn’t shoot the beast.

They eat jellyfish - probably taste like them too - not that I'd know.

Was in Honolulu at an authentic Chinese restaurant and the proprietor offered some raw jellyfish - I gladly passed.

It's fun to run downhill in big chop and come off a wave next to one of those, whose beam is about as wide as my boat. What does it take to rip an outboard off the transom at 24 knots?

I don’t know what it takes to rip an outboard off but sheer pins and lowers have been trashed by those lazy Molas. I’ve never hit one that I recall but I have been close when up on step a few times. I’ve known guys that had to replace their lower unit or their prop from running over a 500++ pound lump of sunfish.

The Ocean Sunfish flesh is unpalatable and may be poisonous, but considered a delicacy in some regions, the largest markets being Korea, Taiwan, and Japan after removing the toxins from it, they are not edible nor have importance in the fishing industry,
