Need you ask man
Need you ask..
🀣🀣🀣

Is that a laminate stock???
Looks almost like a striped rem LSS based type of stock material.

If so what type of finish you gonna do on it.

I have done 3 laminate stocks with tru oil and min spirits cut
50 50 cut.
Very hard to get penetration
220 sand was as far as I would go on em
They need adhesion surface.
Laminate is not a consistent "thirsty" as a natural grained wood, even those had differences between types.
4th laminate stock I did was a badly bubbafied G43 stock I had to do alot of repair work on.
Man when I did that WW2 laminate birch and red glue G43 stock and posted it on here.
That thing was a nightmare.
3 attempts nothing would make a finish stick on it.
Tearing my brains out.

I 320 sanded it intially which was way too fine.

180 sand is what it took and entirely 75% min spirits and 25%
And long 3 day drying times between coats.

Looking back on that stock now.
I woulda done wipe on poly to it and called it good.

Big fan of the clear satin wipe on poly over very very lightly 600 sanded down truoil and min spirits mix with a min spirits rinse for the sanding dust now after the SG I recently did.

Hey buddy,
That is English walnut, I bought the blank from a guy in Ausralia, Roger Vardy, I just put the first coat of finish on today. I use a 2 part epoxy thinned with acetone.
I warm the stock in the oven until it's very warm, then paint it on until it quits soaking in... wet sand when it cures.... then a dozen coats of Tru oil.
Makes the wood relatively weather proof.

irfubar;
Good afternoon Brother Fubar, I hope all is well down in Hollywood so far this weekend.

That stock from Roger is absolutely, 100% to my taste - sorry!! laugh

But indeed, wow! cool

I've been using System 3 G2 as a base coat, but it's a bit thick and shall try the acetone trick.

If you're so inclined, what 2 part epoxy is your favorite and roughly what viscosity are you looking for when it's thinned.

Thanks in advance and good hunting.

Dwayne

Brother Dwayne, I like total boat 2 part epoxy and mix it pretty thin, a little above water viscosity, I warn the stock in a 200 degree oven first, then paint it on until it will no longer soak in. When it cures I wet sand with 320 grit cut with mineral spirits. It leave a nice base for the Tru Oil
