If it ain’t a hard shell, I ain’t sleeping in it.

J.L., was it Gary Hilton camped beside you??

That type person's the reason I've carried a handgun while in the woods/mountains for 70 years. My wife's Ruger Security Six always went with her, too. Hilton was and is just one of many crazies out in the boonies.

As for tents, last time I slept in one was in 2010. I no longer hunt or hike so my Calif. King bed and bedroom ceiling suit me right down to the ground. grin

2005 in Wyoming hunting deer and antelope on a ranch North of Lusk with a buddy of mine.
I still have the Cabelas Big Horn II tent, hoping for another opportunity in the next couple of years.

wabigoon;
Good evening my friend, I hope the day's been a good one for you all and you're all well.

We tented all over the 4 western provinces and many of the northern states. Many times up here and in Yellowstone and Glacier MT we were in bear country too, but somehow we survived.

Since we were foreigners, we weren't allowed to carry noise makers stateside, but up on our side of the medicine line there's usually something in the tent "just in case"....

That all started way back before I was married and buddy and I were hunting up on the south slopes of Big White. We'd hit a logging cut block in the dark, set the tent up by the headlights of my '80 Toyota 4x4 and cooked supper on the tailgate.

We were dead tired and both of us fell to sleep immediately.

Sometime in the night, I was awakened by something sniffing the tent right by my head.....

Slowly and quietly, I slid one hand onto the noisemaker and the other onto a big 3 cell Maglight like we all had back then.

The sniffing slowly circled the tent and as it did, it occurred to me that in our half tired state of setting up the tent and then the sleeping bags, I was not entirely sure where the truck was in relation to my head...

It wouldn't really do to plug the truck now would it?

The other thought that kept on going through my head was that my blissfully snoring hunting partner was going to have a heart attack when I torched one off inside the tent. laugh laugh laugh

Eventually the sniffer left and I fell asleep slightly before morning, only somewhat worse for the wear.

We had a few other "incidents" with both ursine and human creatures of the night over the years tenting, but as I'm still here to tell of them, apparently we survived.

Oh, I think it was last spring we tented last too by the way.

All the best to you all wabigoon.

Dwayne

PS;
Typical Canuck tenting noisemakers.

I don't use a tent. I sleep under a tarp or use a bivvy sack. GD

every night last week....

actually it was a Whelen Lean-To.... a Lean-To is half a tent.

The first night was under the stars since I arrived to late to set up, but that was followed by 2 days of rain after I got the Lean-To set up...

Just this weekend. My son was out of town on business, and my grandson's cub scout den had a camp out so I got to sub for his dad. Never let an opportunity like that get away.

Yes Sir, and “one of many crazies” is way too true.

6 years ago. Eureka nylon with a foot of snow, buddy heater. Upgraded to a tent trailer, then buddy got a big trailer. Then I got a trailer with 2 foot canvas risers, replaced that with solid, so no setup now.
