Whatever your choice: try it at home in bad conditions. Don't depend on something you've never tried. Lighting a fire in the woods takes practice.

Vasoline won't burn. It melts, then as it heats up it vaporizes. The vapor will burn great. Cotton balls COATED with it will light with a spark if you tear it open to expose dry fibers. Once the vapor is burning, it's one of the best. However, if the vasoline is all the way through, it might light with a match once it's heated long enough for it to vaporize, but it won't start with a spark.
Play with it at home before you need it in an emergency.

Make a "candle" out of an empty PAPER shotgun shell. Use a piece of baler twine for a wick and fill the shell full of candle wax. Once the paper starts to burn, it will burn for 5-10 minutes. Works great!

Y'all don't have pine knots?

I do the same. I carry a flint and steel in addition to a lighter and waterproof matches. Take a cotton ball coated with vaseline and pull it into fine fibers and it lights immediately and burns hot for over 5 minutes even if wet.

Discussed extensively.

Someone here sent me some round cotton makeup removal pads i believe dipped in parafin and coated with wax. I haven't tried one yet but they said they work great and burn for quite a while. They are a convenient size about like a 50 cent piece.

We have been using the paper egg carton sections with lint and paraffin wax on them for a very long time. A good way to get rid of all those crappy candles you have laying around the house that were given as gifts for some odd occasion..
We usually hand out about a dozen in a zip loc with a package of water resistant matches with them to put in our guys' packs. They burn anywhere from 3-5 minutes and are easy to light if you tear the edges of the egg holders in a ragged pattern and leave exposed paper. I've used one by itself a couple times to make some tea or hot chocolate with my army canteen cup and still had plenty of fire left to start a small warming fire. They have saved my bacon a few times for sure...

Whatever you plan to use, test them at home in lousy conditions to see how they work.

I like to drip candle wax on vaseline soaked cotton balls for a little extra burn time.
