Hey fellas, working on getting an older M70 PF a face lift.

Granted PTG isn't too well received but I have to keep the budget in mind.

That said, are the current production PTG BDL in either external/factory button release or Obendorf viable replacements?

I had read the Obendorf had a nasty habit of flopping open under recoil but had no first hand information.

Need to decide so I can order a McM and get project moving.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated!

I have a PTG Oberndorf bottom metal on a M70 FW 7 WSM. I like it and prefer it over the factory BM.

Wondering what is wrong with you factory bottom metal?

I have 3-4 sets of PT&G bottom metal aluminum and steel (non-Oberndorf as thats my preference), and haven’t had any issues.

Nothing wrong with the OEM bottom metal, but I just took a stock in trade for a post-64 CRF McM Marksman and it's inletted for 1 piece BDL.

I bought a PTG "canoe" type bottom metal for a Remington 700 in .270 WSM. It was supposed to make it hold 4 in the mag. It doesn't. Also it pops open on recoil and I am trying to fix it. I am using tape around the switch at the moment. There was also too much play in the floorplate. When I emailed PTG about it several times, they didn't answer my emails.

My last Model 70 bottom metal from them dumps it’s contents regularly. I should say did. I don’t have it anymore.

How do you fix the stupid things so they don't keep opening with recoil?

First off, "BDL" is a remington term. I think we are talking Winchester model 70's? If your new stock is inletted for a 1 piece bottom metal, you might want to buy a BACO bottom metal. I've never had any issues with factory Winchester bottom metal. That is PRE 64, Post 64, BACO or otherwise. Good luck with it..

I've got at least dozen of those PTG bottom metals in service, all aluminum, granted the hardest kicking guns are only 375 H&H but have tens of thousands of miles of travel and thousands of rounds through various rifles in various 300 mags and a ton of 35 Whelen. They are excellent.

I've currently got two, but have had an additional 4 or 5 sets. I've had one Oberndorf, and didn't like it. I've never had an issue with any of them. I will say though, if there's a worse co. to deal with than PT&G I'm not sure which it would be.

Definitely true. If you expect to get something on time from PTG (unless they have it in stock) forget it.

Also the vertical inletting seems different from what a lot of stock builders think it is so I have ended up having to bed many or most of them.

I tried one (Obendorf) on my 416 Rem M70 and it was a no go dumping rounds with each shot. I fitted the release button to the floor plate on the factory one and have had zero issues.

I had one that would dump rounds on a 7-08 as the factory inletting didn't match the PTG and the bottom metal was getting deformed when the action screwed got tightened. It stopped when I shimmed the bottom bottom metal.
