I have an old (2006) Cub Cadet CC500 push mower that recently started tearing the starter cord out of my hand and, of course, won't start. The engine is a Briggs Model 1P70FUA. I have: 1) made sure the flywheel key is undamaged, 2) repeatedly adjusted the valves (cold; 0.004" intake, 0.006" exhaust), 3) reset the magneto gap with a business card (will try again with actual feeler gauge - business card is 0.012" and I read the spec as being 0.006" - 0.010"). Blade is properly indexed but I intend to put a new one on just in case. Compression is 120 psi. Has good spark and clean carburetor. 10W-30 oil changed seasonally. The parts guy at the place where I bought it says the engine diagram doesn't show a compression release on the camshaft like the larger engines have.

I would appreciate any help from the campfire's brain trust and am already braced for comments that include "buy a new mower" . wink

Blade tight?

Pull cord pawls are binding ("tearing the starter cord out of my hand").

Won't start is bad fuel probably.

Just a guess.

Church of LDS..🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤣🤣🤣

I can get 3 maybe 4 yrs out of a mower.
My back yard will kill a push mower.

The decks, blade, wheels , wheel spindles, engine mounting bolts just go to schitt in the back yard.

I hate mowing to begin with anyways.
Always have...
Season was done 2 weeks ago.
Bullschit will be back last week of march 1st week of april again...
😡😡😡
🤣🤣🤣

Renegade50 get some goats man. As far as OP goes, you've done more already than I ever would have for a push mower. No idea man

Have you checked for exhaust blockage? muffler innards rusting out and plugging up the works , nesting materials, carbon deposits on the spark arrestor screen, etc

Do a compression test. It sounds like you've got enough carbon deposits that the fuel is Dieseling before the spark plug fires, trying to run the engine backwards. Compression pressure should be around 100 PSI, max. Severe carburetor flooding will do something similar- - - -liquid gasoline in the cylinder can't be compressed.

Does it pull ok with the plug out ? Sometimes the parts people are wrong. The mechanism that bumps a valve open for compression release is defective

Any chance you're carb is leaking/pouring fuel into the cylinder slowly between uses creating hydraulic-lock?
