During WWII brass wasn't available so Zippo used steel and painted them with a "black crackle" finish. All production was donated to the war effort. I have a number of those, including one NIB - never lit. Zippo lighters have a date code on the bottom. The dots and dashes are on both sides of the logo. I think that they appreciated that while I didn't smoke, I always brought a carton of Kools and a carton of Marlboros whenever we went to the field, since back then the majority of NCOs ran on caffeine and nicotine and I didn't want any of them to run out of fuel when we were shooting, moving, and communicating.

I opened it and wedged it against a large rock and stomped it into oblivion. I do own a nifty Zippo stainless folding knife. I do see a lot of interest in Zippo stuff at collector shows.
