Does anyone know why my ammo has black marks on it after it was left in the magazine of my Marlin 1895 45/70 for 4 to 5 days ??

First off, is the magazine tube clean?

The next thing I’d wonder about, is it only one type of ammo or case, that was destined to ‘tarnish’ anyway? Like, would a different brand of ammo, or other cases that were reloaded stay more pristine?

Other than that, I don’t have much.

Cleaning solvent left in the mag tube would be my bet.

Hoppes #9 or one of the other ammonia-based copper solvents.

That happens constantly to any cartridges I have in a leather belt with cartridge loops. I am assuming it has something to do with chemicals in the leather.

I just scrape it off with a knife and steel wool. Never had an issue with it.

Yeah, verdigris.

OP said the cartridges were in the "magazine".
