What scope is that?

If I'm going to be shooting past 75yds or so on local big game, I want to be able to reach at least 6x on the top end. I find the 1.5-6 and 2-7 stuff to be just the ticket for rifles that will be used from 10-200yds most frequently. You can still dial up enough magnification to make out some spikes on a deer's head at 100-150yds, which is helpful for me. The 1.5 or 2x on the bottom is great for up close. Objective diameter is usually decent enough for light-gathering. I fail to see the downside of a trim 2-7 in this role. On the upper end, I only have one big game scope with a 12x top magnification. The others are all in the 3-9 and 3-10 range. It's fine for the hunting that I do, as I rarely shoot past 400yds.

Shooting 'at' don't count. Hitting them does.....

The CDS system can distract someone when they should be concentrating on a good shot rather than turning knobs. I was with someone recently who had 3 elk in view at 140 yards in the trees, fiddled with the magnification and CDS on a 7mm mag, had a good rest, plenty of time, and ultimately resulted in a wounded and lost animal. A fixed 4 might have been a better option.

Actually having a clue about how to use his scope would have been a better option.

I've switched almost everything that I own over to 1.5 or 1.75-6 or less magnification.

I don't get to shoot long distances. There's no advantage to having a scope with more power than that for me. If anything, more magnification is a negative for me.

Matter of fact, on many things that I own (crossbow for instance) have removed scopes altogether and nothing but a simple red dot is there.

My 10mm AR that I made earlier this year for whitetail hunting, another red dot.

I simply don't get shots over 75 yards ordinarily and to be honest, 15-30 yards is more common for me. Have a 6-24 scope is just stupid at those distances. You put the scope up to your eye and see nothing but a tan blur.

Yes, but you're probably not shooting at those smaller targets farther away with a Ruger 44 Carbine.

It possible my vari-x -iii 3.5-10x50 , that was originally planned for the trip until I had such good luck with the Burris at the range, would have been a touch brighter but at that range the bit of extra magnification at 12x from the signature select was welcome. As it occurred it probably only took a few seconds to find the bull and put the crosshairs on him. It felt like hours to me as light was fading and it was the last day of the season. Good memories that will stay with me forever.

One 22 rimfire rifle has a Weaver 2.5x, two have Leupold RF 4x scopes and my Browning has a Leupold 1-4x. I have a Leupold 4x on four centerfire hunting rifles and a Big Bore 3x on my Savage 99. If I could get a thicker reticle in the matte finish 4x28mm Leupold I'd mount it on my Win. stainless classic FW I'd switch it with the 6x36 on it.

Please tell me where I can get a trim 2-7 with today's quality glass in it.

I figure that an optic should fit the purpose of the rifle. Big critters, less Xs. Smaller critters, lots more Xs. They all have their uses.

There is an older Leupold 2-7 compact that has decent enough glass for it's purpose. I have one on my Sako Vixen 222 Rem that has sent a number of coyotes to that big lamb pasture in the sky. The VX 2-7s have a smaller ocular housing so they can be mounted lower and clear the bolt handle also. It's when you get into fast focus eye pieces that they start getting bulky. Never could figure out why they put those on scopes, how hard is it to loosen a lock ring and adjust the scope

I liked the Leupold 2-7 compacts. I had 3, all on BLR's. I liked the smaller ocular housing for levers; they allowed better access to the hammer. I currently have a gloss model waiting to go on a trip back to Beaverton. I've been dragging my feet because I feel like they might just replace it instead of repair it, and there's really nothing in their current line up that turns my crank.

My 10/22 carries a 4-16. The long range bolt .22 has a 6-24X.
