I change my own oil in our 3 vehicles, the tractor, 4 wheelers, etc. Don't trust even a dealership with an oil change and certainly not Walmart. Anyway the usual Mobil 1 was not available the other day when I was in town nor was Castrol. My wife's Toyota and my 2020 GMC both use 0W20 and Royal Purple 0W20 was on the shelf at over $10 extra per 5 quart jug. Not much on going to town so I bought it but haven't used it yet.
Does anyone here have an opinion good or bad on Royal Purple? I've never used it. My GMC is getting to the 17% oil life, and when it goes below 10% it will start asking for a oil change.

Which GMC engine uses 0w20? I"m a big fan of Amsoil products personally, and I change my own oil too.

Probably ain't much more protection and life than the 20k wally world full synthetic in 5qt jugs for 27 bucks..
0 experience with the royal purple other than looking at its price on the aisle.
YMMV...

Never heard bad about it - I tend to prefer Amsoil if making a choice.
IMO - filtration matters more than oil as oil tends to get dirty before it wears out. Spend the money on a filter and change at reasonable intervals and you'll be okay.

Just curious if he had the same engine. That Walmart SuperTech, Amazon Basics, and Costco's Kirkland synthetic oils are made in the same place, Warren Distribution, and are pretty well regarded.

Been using it for 20+ years, gear oil and such.
Have not used their motor oil, didn’t know they made motor oil.

Great oil. It and Mobil one are the onely "real" (Group IV) synthetics I believe.
A good principle to guide me through life: “This is all I have come to expect, standard lackluster performance. Trust nothing, believe no one and realize it will only get worse…”

Complete crap. 45+ years building engines and I've never seen a synthetic oil that leaves so much deposits. We had a full on racing sponsorship with them and never put that crap in our engines.

I use Mobil 1 (0w20) in my 2021 GMC with the 5.3. I use Wix XL filters. I bought them at Rock Auto for $6 each. They run $13 each at O reily. I bought 6 filters and even with shipping save around 30 bucks. For my other vehicles, Honda and Toyota, I have been using the Supertech for years. You have to watch out though, as Walmart will charge you the wrong price on the Supertech sometimes. To the original question, we ran RP in our big block, Nitros and fuel injected mud truck, 20w50. It was good stuff then, and I am sure it is still good stuff. This was in the early to mid 90's. Clyde

The best oil on the market isn't going to be better than the cheap stuff it it's full of carbon and wear particles because of poor filtration or too long of change intervals.
4 out of 5 Great Lakes prefer Michigan.

My girlfriend has a 4 cylinder Buick that uses 0W-20.
I’m not much on the designer oils. I’m sure Royal purple is OK but I se no need to pay more for the fancy marketing and I’m not dealing with Amsoil’s silly pyramid scheme stuff just to buy oil. I’ve run several vehicles over 300k on dino oil and by then it’s time to get rid of them because you’re constantly fix other things not oil related.
Mobil 1 or Castrol are both great so I see no use for anything else. I have two vehicles that use 0W-20 so I ordered a dozen Mobil1 5 qt jugs off of WalMart.com and stashed them in my shop. If you order enough the delivery is free and it shows up in a couple of days. When I need to change oil I just grab one, no running around trying to find it. You can get it off of Amazon for roughly the same price I think.

I’m not dealing with Amsoil’s silly pyramid scheme stuff just to buy oil. I buy mine at the Napa mom/pop about 4 blocks down the road. I often hear this about Amsoil tho - most people have issue with how it's sold, not what's in the bottle.

If you change your oil every 3,000 miles, high end performance oils are a waste of $$$$.
I buy Kirkland's Full Synthetic for $4.00 a quart. Was $3.50, but with Biden's energy tax, it got more spensive - like everything else.

Full flow oil filters are there to strain out rocks, marbles, and bowling balls. The media must be open weave enough to allow all the oil the engine needs for lubrication to flow through it. To really filter oil effectively, add a Frantz-style bypass filter. It traps particles down to 1 micron or smaller, much better than any brand of full flow filter.
Ignorance can be fixed. Stupid is forever!
