I picked up from the original owner a custom 284win, Rem 700 short action BDL. The throat was cut long and the mag box lengthened. I'm wanting to stick around the 140 grainers. I need to shoot bullets that have a short ogive to tip distance, in order to seat just off the rifling and still fit in the mag box. I came up with this from measuring, documenting, and pondering.
Is there an easy way to get this info without measuring every brand?
Thanks,
R.D.

Begin by calling the bullet manufacturers with the bullets you have in mind within each brand/model of bullet. Most of them have CS/tech people who may be able to give some decent answers.

Nobody shoots them anymore, but a round-nose bullet of some sort might be just the ticket. Not even sure if anyone makes them anymore...

You may find seating just off the rifling not necessary, particularly if the diameter of the throat is close to bullet diameter.

Speer spitzer bullets are a little blunter/shorter in the nose than most I've tried. You might find what you want with them.

I wouldn't sweat the distance to the lands. Load to fit and feed from magazine and work up a load. If you are not completely satisfied, you could seat deeper for a few increments to see if it improves the groups if necessary.
At some point in recent years handloaders began to chase the lands. I think it has to be borrowed from the BR guys. VLD style bullets became the bullet of choice, with their high BC, they tended to do their best very close or into the lands.
We older handloaders have had great success with all sorts of bullets jumping an unknown distance with great accuracy for decades. Yes that is right we never even KNEW that we had to know the bullet's relationship with the lands. We just seated bullets and went from there.

I checked about a dozen bullets from 120gr to 162gr to the lands in the same 7mm-08 chamber. The three with the shortest COAL were the 140gr Sierra Pro Hunter (#1910), 145gr Speer HPBT, and the 160gr Sierra HP Game King (#1925).

If the throat was cut close to the bullet diameter as the bullet as in Weatherby, the bullet would have to touch the lands to shoot well. Since it was a custom job, I'd hope that was the case.
I prefer classic. Semper Fi I used to run with the hare. Now I'm envious of the tortoise and I do my own stunts but rarely intentionally

Make a dummy round with some grip on a bullet and chamber it. I usually start with a fired case and use the seating die to apply a small amount of crimp to the case neck. Bullet needs to be able to slide in the case. Just a little difficult move with fingers. Chamber long and allow the action to seat the bullet

I’m betting a 140 partition or 139 gr interlock fb would be the ticket.

Bullets matter wayyyyyyy more than headstamps,as your Goat Fhuqk illustrates. Hint.
No point schlepping a Custom Goat Fhuqk, that can't even begin to keep pace with 6.5 Kreed Factory Fodder. Read that again. Now one more time. Hint..............
