LGS has a decent condition used S&W 4006 with one magazine (10 round) for asking price of $319. I know these are older and not particularly favored, plus being a .40 rather than a 9mm, but that seemed very cheap to me. The bore was good, the single action trigger decent and the only marks on the gun were a couple of small rubs on the top of the slide.
Did I screw up by not buying it on the spot? I have a 39-2 and a 5906 so I don't really need another S&W double action semi, but the price really shocked me.

Always liked the 4006. Though they’re a bit heavy for a holster gun, they can be made shoot those .40” bullets pretty darn well: The unusual thing about the 4006s is that their double action drops the hammer sooner than does my 5906, 3913 or my 645 with 4506 guts. Nothing wrong with that; it’s just different. For diehard S&W DA revolver shooters, I’m thinking the 3rd Generation S&W autos just might be the easiest autos to shoot well the soonest.

The closest I had was 457, it gave no problems. These show wear on barrel after few boxes of ammo so if there is no wear it has been hardly shot. Original factory mags are expensive. I would buy it if I needed a gun. There is nothing wrong with .40 S&W. You can find practice ammo on sale for same price as 9mm Luger. I could never understand why same type gun in .45 ACP (4506) costs > 2x more and 10mm auto (1006) 4x more.🤷

Nothing wrong with that; it’s just different. Nice shooting exchippy. I knew you had one of these great pistols. Mine shoots that well too. Very easy pistol to handle because of the heft. Very quick reset on the trigger and fast follow up shots are the norm with these 3rd gens. Some guys may scoff at them, but those are the ones with no experience, which is normal around here. The guys at my club call my 3rd gens my "race guns". They are quick on the bowling pins, for sure. I haven't shot mine for months. The last time was to run the "Dicken's" drill, back in July. .. Great pistols and at $319, I would have been all over that one. They sell for much more than that on gunbroker.
I try to stick with the basics, they do so well. Nothing fancy mind you, just plain jane will get it done with style. You want to see an animal drop right now? Shoot him in the ear hole. BSA MAGA

It’s the quality of their double action in conjunction with their grip ergonomics which got me hooked.

One of the few .40's that were designed as a .40 from the get go. They're brute strong, quite reliable. Finding magazines is a bit more difficult and expensive, but the pistol is a solid gun.

I don’t need another handgun but at that price I would have bought it, especially in today’s market.

I have one .40 now, don’t need one, certainly don’t need another one, probably would have grabbed it at that price just for all the reasons expressed here.

Did S&W ever fix the early unlocking of the 4006? Mine made some of the worst firing pin swipes on primers that I’ve seen.
Some were so bad the primer cup tore metal out. Other than that they were great shooters.

I got rid of all my .40 guns, but at that price it wouldn’t sit in the case

I wouldn't take it if I got paid $319. I bought one when they first came out, had to be about 93. It was one of the least accurate pistols I've ever shot. Best it could do was a paper plate sized group at 10 yards. I was in college at the time, on a shooting team - so it wasn't me. I don't know if it was a lemon, bad ammo, or just poor design. It's one the few guns I sold and never regretted selling.

Please be careful, the .40S&W is "snappy".😂🤣 The American Policija Federal and most other departments switched to 9mm Luger.

That's a steal for a 4006. You could flip it for a $200-250 premium the next day on S&W sites. I own a 4566 and the sheer weight of an all stainless DA/SA tames recoil better than most.
