Son and I took a trip to my place in KS to chase whitetails this weekend. He's been a huge help all fall on my hunts and was hoping to get him on a good whitetail. I remembered to toss in a lawn chair and my tree loppers in case I decided to ground sit somewhere. High winds kept action to a minimum on Sat night. Sunday morning early we were both setup in stands along the river. About 9:30 am I saw a doe and two fawns come jumping up out of the bottom. Figured a buck would pop out. My nicknamed G2 buck came out hot and pushed them up river right towards my son. Great, I thought, kid can get that one. About 5 minutes later, here they came on a run back to me. Does went south and buck went back to river thicket. About 11 am I climbed down.

Talked to my son and they never made it to him. So thinking the buck would come out and go past my stand, I stuck my son there at 3 pm. I took my folding chair and loppers and went to my south border. There were a lot of scrapes along that fence and I figured a buck may come by. Its pretty open country and not what a midwesterner would think of as a good daylight spot but I was really just killing time. I lopped out 3 shooting lanes and had my chair setup right on the fence. About 10 minutes after sunset, I noticed G2 about 70 yards from my son's stand. Then he abruptly headed west and out of sight. Dang, wise old thing.

Next thing I knew I could see him coming east right on my fenceline with 10 minutes of light left. I kept thinking he'd jump the fence and go for the does out in the wheat field. But on he came for 250 yards on a fast walk. At 40 yards I went ahead and knelt one knee on the ground. At 20 he went behind a cedar and I drew back. At 14 and still walking he took one in the boiler room and died after a 70 yard walk. Crazy stuff sometimes. Good stuff but not what I had planned. We'll be back for round 2 and hoping son can notch that tag of his.

The pic with the quiver showing, shot the buck right to the right of that cedar above it. I mowed that strip all down the fence row to kind of funnel them there back in August. Seemed to work well and I'll do that again next year.

Very nice! I archery hunt almost exclusively on the ground and it’s a different ballgame than being in a tree. I always feel like I really accomplished something when I manage to get drawn on one from the ground and inside my 20 yard limit without being busted.

Nice buck! I love hearing the details of a successful hunt.

Really been something this year. I've had plenty of years where the setups weren't quite right, or the draws treated me badly. This year it just keeps falling in place. Better lucky than good. Typically a rifle guy so having the 3 critters this year shot at an average of 24 yards has been pretty neat for me. Thanks for the compliments and good luck to you all this fall. Lot of time left.
