I just got a Savage 99 Takedown Model in 303 Savage. When I fire it on the range the forend of the stock, under barrel comes off. It seems the spring may be too weak to hold it in place under recoil.

Anybody ever seen this issue?

I would also like to add a sling and wonder if the screws that hold the catch for the takedown forend will be solid enough to never accidentally come off while carrying or climbing a tree.

My dad, who recently passed, had black tape on the front of the forend and around the barrel. A very pragmatic approach to my problem. I’m hoping for a more elegant solution.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.

try cleaning the latch then a touch of oil , check the barrel lug for ware, if neither of those work i have a spare spring , or if u are state side get hold of Lightfoot. And yes the latch if working properly will hold the sling . the savage sling eye would work ,Lightfoot or Calhoun can post a pic of it.

I have the same issue on one of mine. The lug is fine, but the end of the latch that fits under the lip on the lug is worn.

My takedown parts drawer is empty.

One of the screws in the takedown latch is a machine thread #8-40. My no-drill sling stud will fit it.

I think I’d like to get a sling stud that would fit that insert. Do you sell them?

Is there normally a set of spacers under the latch? I took the latch out and it appears to have red spacers that might be plastic or phenolic. They appear to be intended to space the latch away from the wood (away from the barrel). This may have been to reduce play between the stock and the barrel.

Thoughts?

Spacers are certainly not normal there. Maybe someone was trying to resolve the loose latch problem?

I'd remove them and start over.

So I took a closer look at the hook on the barrel. Is this the correct shape? It seems like that shape would not be the best at keeping the forend on, under recoil.

Here are some photos.

That's sort of the shape but it looks like someone may have done some filing. There are some on eBay for sale, some with screws some without.

It's been awhile since I've had a latch out of the fore end but I don't recall the spring sticking out like the one in the picture.

When the latch is in the forend the spring is basically flush with the back of the metal.

That hook is slanted some but that one looks pretty worn. Hard to find a replacement. Numrich shows stock on one style but it's a crap shoot on what they ship.

Good to see that mine might not be too far off. It doesn’t seem like the bearing section where the latch catches is parallel with the barrel. It does slope down, which would seem to make it hold less securely. Maybe my spring is just weak.

A little of topic, but how do you disassemble the latch.

The end of the slide button is peened to hold it together. So. disassembly means getting it back through the pointed latch pin.

Not a lot of fun to fool with...

That’s what I was thinking , but wasn’t sure. The pin on mine is worn and was going to try and replace it.
Thanks
