Does anybody have any experience with the 45 cal 300 grain xtp mags on deer at muzzleloader velocities and how they perform. I’ve read mixed reviews about expansion but don’t really see if it matters with a 45 diameter bullet

I go by the velocity chart listed here:

https://www.chuckhawks.com/underrated_hornady_XTP.htm

If you don't have enough velocity, switch to the non-mag version. With that said, I've never had an issue an XTP (any version) putting a deer down with a decent blood trail. I can't say the same for other bullets.

I do not know about expansion in a whitetail deer. I never recovered a Hornady .452 300 grain XTP Mag bullet. I thought I would be smart and try the non Mag XTP Hornady 300 grain bullet. It still made two holes. Muzzle velocities we’re 1800 to 1959fps. Use with confidence.

Yes. I’ve shot multiple deer with .452 300 gr XTP mags in a shot from a .50 CVA Accura MR over 110 gr (by volume) BH209.

Absolute hammers on deer. Always pass throughs and never recovered a bullet. No list deer, and after field dressing, the bullets clearly expanded and made a huge mess going through.

However, I’d only shoot the Mags over charges over 100 gr of high performing BP substitutes to get the needed velocity.

The XTP Mags are not the projectile yo shoot over 80 gr of real black powder.
